After much research, we went with titanium braces (which are nickel-free). My son did really well with them, and titanium seems to be a "safe" option. He went from having very messed up teeth (would have caused him duress later in life if we didn't get orthodontia) to a beautiful smile. Note that not all ortho's use titanium.

Our next dilemma was with regard to his retainers. They tried to make him "permanent" retainers made out of titanium, but they kept braking. We went for the plastic (?) retainers because they seemed like our best option. Still not 100% comfortable with that choice, BTW. I can't recall what they are actually called/made of.
