Guest guest
Sharon, I would think that if your TN pain is coming from the side of your jaw from the ear area, then the noises that you are hearing are sensory related to the TN and the ear is being affected. It could be that you are in such a relaxed state that your brain is able to process the auditory situation whereas when you are fully awake, the noises tend to abate. Are you on carbazepine or oxycarbazepine (Trileptal) for the TN? This anti-seizure medication helps a lot of people with TN. I don’t know much about Baclofen. Also, I know that you posted about going on Effexor. I want to caution you about it. That is a really bad drug to discontinue. I stopped it cold turkey and spent almost 3 weeks in horrible shape. I wouldn’t take it again unless I was commiting to take it for life. Going off that medication gave me “brain freezes” where my vision and sensory perception were completely delayed with what was going on. I later found out that my GP really screwed up on this one and that I should have been on a taper down schedule to go off of the drug. Live and learn. Anyway, if your TN isn’t coming from your jaw/ear area, then you need to call the doc. Guest guest
Beth: Thank you. You make a lot of sense and it does seem to fit. I'm not on Trileptal. Is that what you take? I take Neurontin and Baclofen only. It wasn't me thinking about Effexor. My doc gave me samples of Cymbalta to try but I haven't made the decision to do it yet. That's not the same as Effexor is it? Guest guest
Sharon, I take Trileptal, Neurontin, Prednisone, & Synthroid. Whoever it was that was going on Effexor will hopefully see my post. Cymbalta and Effexor are two different drugs, although both are commonly used to treat depression. The Trileptal is quite expensive, but it has been very effective for me. I have a dilemma as my dentist thinks I need a root canal. I have to consult with my Neuro later this month. I have seen a lot of information where people have had unnecessary root canals when they have TN. The dentist is convinced that doing the root canal will solve the inflammation I have, but the last Neuro I saw before being referred to the MS clinic told me the pain is not from the tooth root. I don’t really want to go through a root canal to find that it didn’t solve the pain problem….so I am sitting on the fence for now until I see Neuro on the 24th. As for the noise, circus music is not too bad. What if you were hearing a loud monotonous banging….and it didn’t go away! There are other TN patients that suffer from continual tinnitus. Guest guest
Beth: I take Baclofen, Neurontin, Synthroid and Triamter/HCTZ (for high blood pressure). And hydrocodone for pain. It doesn't do anything for most of the nerve pain but does help with my back/neck pain and some of the TN pain. I've heard stories of dental work actually aggravating or causing TN pain. I am facing some major dental work and I'm trying to decide what to do too. I don't want to make things worse. I've got some gum disease around some molars, can't chew on that side now. I had a bunch of work done on that far back molar a few years ago but the fillings all fell out recently and the gums are swollen. That's the same area where I've had big TN pain before so I don't know what to think about it. The last time I had my teeth cleaned it threw me into an MS attack. So I am pretty leery of dental stuff. lol You're right. Circus music or parade music is not bad when considering what it could be. Doesn't everyone love a parade??? Guest guest
Sharon, I know what you mean about being leery of the dentist. After the last cleaning I had, I was in pain for over 2 weeks. I just finished a course of antibiotics for inflammation/infection, and this gave me a UTI. I am getting really sick of the doctor cycle. I feel like I am passed from doctor to doctor as they all try to do what they can. Now the GP is referring me to the Urologist. Urinary retention is becoming a problem. Have you had any experience with this? What does the urologist do to figure out how to help it? My girlfriend told me a story of how they fill you up and then watch you go…..not exactly what I wanted to hear. Anyway, the understanding ear is here. Dealing with TN is very trying on the nerves. Ask your doc about the Trileptal or Tegretol. It may really help you. Guest guest
Connie, Thanks for the reply on this. Not looking forward to it all. How does the caffeine and carbonated beverage cause a problem? Seems to me that all liquid would be suspect. When I try to just drink water, it seems to make it harder to void completely. What have they told you about the caffeine and carbonated beverages? Guest guest
Beth, Caffeine and carbonated drinks irritate the bladder lining and makes the urgency worse. I also struggle with citrus especially tomatoes. It causes terrible bladder spasms for me. I drink mostly water and skim milk. Pretty boring but it seems to help. Let me know how your tests go. Guest guest
Deb, Depends on how much you were on before you stopped the Effexor. Usually small doses don’t have the same effect as those that take it 3 bid in higher doses. If they took you off the drug without a taper down, then you probably are suffering the effects of discontinuance. I hate to tell you this, but it lasts a few weeks. Guest guest
Hi Beth ~ I was on Effexor for 2 years (but was also on Lexapro at the same time), so when I got a new doc, she decided I didn't need both, so she just dropped the Effexor & said, "Don't take it any more." I think the worst sx so far has been the swelling of my feet & legs - for a week now, but it's finally subsiding - and I'm definately more emotional - but all in all, it could be alot worse. I was taken off all of my meds a year ago when I was abruptly taken off Medicaid and put on Medicare - I ended up in the hospital in detox. Bad, bad, bad. so this, I can live with.
