I had four different kinds of tests for yeast: from antibodies to

electrolytes. All were negative except for Great Smokies which said I was in

the may-be-a-pathogen-may-be-normal range. I was put on the diet and Nystatin

because a physical exam and history put me in the 99% probability category.. I

had to work up the Nystatin dose a dot on the toothpick a day. The diet helped

enormously. I still have to follow it, though I'm no longer on Nystatin

because it was too hard on my system. Ironically, when I was on Minocin all

that went away. I could eat anything, my bowels worked fine (I have all sorts

of abnormal bacteria that doesn't belong but can't do anything about it now,

not being able to take Minocin). I read somewhere that Minocin might be an

antifungal/antiyeast, as well. I sure think so. Deb

I do not know that I have any symptoms, however since the minocycline seems

to be ineffective lately, I am going under the assumption that I may have a

yeast problem or leaky gut as is suggested by Ethel and and supported

apparently by Dr. and Dr. Weg. Therefore I am taking olive

leaf 2caps 3x/day daily. I recently came through (I think) a nasty little

herx episode where I felt totally wasted. I feel much better in that

regards now, although the sore joints remain, so we shall see where this

takes me. I may also start taking slippery elm as suggested by for

healing of my leaky gut, should I have that and since I have been on

anti-inflammatories steady for over a year, there is a good possibility that

I could have that problem. As far as any intestinal symptoms go, I have had

none and no indications of yeast as one would expect to see, but again as

Ethel pointed out - the symptoms can remain " hidden " and manifest themselves

in other ways. This is backed up by Dr. 's book on olive leaf.

Time will tell!

Anyone who is faithfully following the yeast-eradication diet and is still

experiencing problems with joint pain and, especially, foot pain: I'd like

to suggest that you get off of red meat and pork for a trial period of two

weeks and consume only small portions of fish, chicken, and turkey (no, you

can't make that fried -- ho, ho) along with your fruit and vegetables.

I'm a walker and a reader. Over a year ago my feet/toes began giving me

real problems. Internist said increase my B vitamins. No improvement. He

sent me to a podiatrist. Found nothing and said it was my " disease. " I

decided all this sounded a bit like gout (which I had never had). Turned

over to " Gout " in the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Dr.

Balch to read about it. Guess what? It said that if one was on medication

such as tetracycline, there might be a build-up of uric acid; also, meats

can cause a build-up of uric acid. I had been on a low consumption of meat

for a long time, but had just come back from a week's vacation where we were

served (and I ate) lots more meat than usual. The light bulb in my brain

again came on. I was not about to give up my Minocin, but I immediately

quit eating beef/pork. I promise you all, every day the pain in my feet

started leaving like the mercury in a thermometer going down. Even the

tingling in my toes that had been around for a long time went away -- and

it's still gone. Hope if you try this it works for you. At any rate, I

believe it can't hurt you and may help in many other ways. Billie

hI ,

After reading The Yeast Syndrome by Trowbridge ( excellent book!)I

realized I had a yeast problem. I followed the diet and really experienced

lots of improvement.

I was amazed at the way it really cleared up that " foggy Feeling " . You

wouldn't

believe the herx I had for about 5 days after starting the diet.

Olive leaf is really good stuff. You could also add grapefruit extract which

really controls yeast. Are you eating sugary foods? Yeast lives on sugar so

eliminating sugars, cakes and all sugary treats from your diet is essential

to control it. Also the eight glasses of water a day is important.

If you are having vaginal yeast problems, you can use tea tree oil on a tampon

for several days and it will get rid of it locally. Some people need it diluted.

Hi ,

Sorry to hear that, but have you tried making your own yoghourt? If you do

(using a commercial natural yoghourt as a starter), you can leave it making

for 24 hours. This should get rid of all the lactose. You may then find that

you can take it. It is worth a try, because this is an extremely effective

probiotic. For those of us whose problem is due to bacterial growth in the

gut, we really should be trying to get as many good bacteria in there as

possible to restrain the bad guys.

Delaine,

I have been suffering for MANY MANY years with what I now know is a major

yeast overgrowth. It started long before I began the AP as I have been on

various antibiotics since I was 6 months old (I'm 33) and I have been on

prednisone for 9 years. It actually wasn't until I started the AP 3 years

ago that I really became fully aware of yeast overgrowth problems and that is

when I started taking acidophilus. However, acidophilus won't help much if a

yeast problem is already well underway - you have to actually remove the

yeast in order for the replenishment of the good bacteria to be beneficial.

I tried to get a prescription for diflucan, but my insurance company

considers it a " one-time, one-pill " treatment for vaginal yeast infections

and my co-pay is $10 PER PILL! I've been doing a lot of research and found a

company called " The Candida Wellness Center " that has a program called " The

Candida Answer " . Problem is their products are EXTREMELY expensive and being

a single parent trying hard to make ends meet I simply CANNOT afford it -

we're talking over $300 a month! What I plan to do is take the information

from this program and try to apply it in a less expensive manner. Their

program includes a product called 'Candicyn' that contains Pau D'Arco,

Oregano, Sodium Caprylate, Grapefruit Seed, Barberry, Ginger, Cinnamon and

Biotin (I have not found a comparable product yet, so may purchase this one

from the program); as well as Olive Leaf Extract; Colloidal Silver;

Bromelain; and an acidophilus/bifidum/bulgaricus product. If anyone is

intersted in the booklet, which I found to be very informative (and it's

free), their web address is www.cwchealth.com

Good luck,

Kim

Hi Delaine,

I have had a terrible yeast and fungus infections since the new year. I

have a fungus on my large toenail and had a mould infection which destroyed

the hammer in my ear and perforated my ear drum. I have had continuous

jock itch too. My gp said as you get older you develop fungus on your

toenails.

I stopped taking Minocycline in March because of it and the jock itch has

gone completely. I have also noticed the ridges in my nails and the

brittleness has gone from my nails and the skin under them looks pink and

healthy. My nails haven't looked so good, ever. Even prior to taking

Mino I had brittle, peeling nails. My skin looks better too and isn't

mottley, purple and white blotchy on my arms.

I don't know whether not taking Mino would cause the improvement but it

makes me wonder.

I was on a course of Diflucan in the winter which worked. I am afraid of

taking Mino now because of my damaged ear. I am on no meds and am very

stiff. It is much like the morning stiffness I had but lasts all day.

Dear Carol,

I'm no expert, but I think you're right about stopping the Minocycline

for a while to correct the yeast problem and then return to it later.

Yes, the yeast is very probably contributing to your arthritis symptoms.

Yeast is a very serious problem if it gets out of control. A systemic

infection of yeast can do tremendous damage to the body, even cause death.

If your infection is as serious as you stated, I would focus just on that

problem until you get results. You should be under the care of a

doctor who really knows how to treat it. There are tests available

that will isolate the strains and test them for sensitivity. Some

of the drugs, as you probably know, used to treat yeast are toxic to the

liver. If your strain is resistant to that drug, you are taking an

unnecessary risk in taking it.

Also most of the probiotics available on the market are junk.

Contrary to their claims, the acidophilus is dead from sitting on the shelf

too long. Other strains will die off when they contact stomach acid,

and never reach the intestines. You owe it to yourself to do a little

research and find a really good probiotic.

I just heard about a new product that is also be beneficial to yeast

infections. It's from France, and it is a beneficial type of yeast

that is completely safe. Yeast against yeast, I guess. It helps

to restore the natural balance of intestinal flora. The product is

called Florastor, and has apparently been researched extensively in European

and American universities. They have a website you can check out.

Here's the information from the box. I'm not trying to sell anything.

My Naturopathic doctor said she's had wonderful success with this.

Here's the information from the box.

Hi everyone,

I have run into a major problem. Before I started the protocol

I had been on antibiotics for years for recurring sinus infections.

Later I

Anyway, as

a result of years of antibiotics, years of prednisone, and too

much chemo for

my R.A. (immune system became too suppressed) I got a major

problem with

sytemic yeast. (Test indicated)

Now, since I have began the protocol I am currently on, which is

taking

minocycline, I have gotten much worse with the yeast problem.

I was even

taking bunches of good encapsulated probiotics, nystatin, and an

antiyeast

diet. This was not enough. The mino really affects

my yeast. My yeast is

so bad that I have severe rashes on buttock and some on back and

even around

my nose. I feel that the yeast is everywhere and is a major

part of my

problem. The probiotics are even causing severe heartburn

as is the

minocycline. I have been sitting up for 2 hours after taking

the minocycline

as my doctor instructed.I am taking zantac and prilosec, but it

wasn't

enough. The nystatin started causing almost diarrhea and

I even started

having blood in my stool ( sorry if that sounds bad). Anyway,

I stopped the

mino., probiotics and nystatin about 5 days ago and I am already

better, as

far as my digestive system is concerned. The rashes have

improved

significantly, as well.

I took a Diflucan yesterday ( I have taken it before). My

right eye is now

really swollen and weeping profusely. This happened to me

before when I took

an all natural yeast killer. This did not happen before with

the Diflucan

and it was only a few weeks ago. I feel like this is

the yeast trying to

get out as the Diflucan kills it. Since I didn't have this

reaction with

Diflucan before, I feel like this is how much my yeast problem

has worstened.

Anyway, I hate to stop taking the minocycline temporarily,

but I don't see

that I have much of a choice. I feel that the yeast is taking over

my body.

I would love to get rid of the yeast and then resume the minocycline.

Also,

I want to give my esophagus and stomach time to heal. I have

been on the

minocycline approx. 2 1/2 months. I really hate to lose the

ground I have

from the mino., but don't know if it can really be that effective

with all

the yeast problems. Any suggestions? I have even thought

that maybe for 1

month treat the yeast and then go on the lowest dose of mino. and

see what

happens.

Thanks,

Carol

Hi Carol,

What dose of minocycline are you on? If you're on a daily dose, it would

be a good idea to drop to an intermittent dose MWF and see if the yeast

problem improves. You still need the probiotics (take more on the days

you're not taking minocycline) and no sugar at all so that the yeast

starves.

Diflucan is pretty toxic stuff - nystatin is gentler.

If the low dose of minocycline doesn't help, you might have to stop taking

it for up to four weeks while you get the yeast under control. Do you get

the same yeast problem with doxycycline?

Don't stop the probiotics whichever way you go. You could also use olive

leaf extract and grapefruit extract (www.citricidal.com from memory is

one supplier) to get the yeast under control. Don't forget the eight

glasses of water a day.

Chris.

We started biocidin about a month ago to help with Klebsiella Pneumonae. I

think it has helped my sons yeast problem alot- more than nystatin has.

By the way, we had a major regression when we added ALA too. I think he was

on too high a dose. good luck.

We had our son on Nystatin for two months and it didn't do anything. We

retested his stool and found out that the type of yeast he has is

resistant to Nystatin so he's now on Diflucan with minimal side effects

(a little more hyper than usual.). We're stopping chelation for awhile

until yeast is more under control.

maybe try loading up on the probiotics too. I found " Ultra Flora Plus " (DF)

by Metagenics and Pro-'Culture Gold by Kirkmans to be great. I mix them

together in rice milk and give at least 3x a day. Jon used to have yeast

overgrowth, thrush of the mouth and red ring around the anus before these

and of course he was aggressive and hyper too.

maybe the ALA stirred up the Mercury ?? In that case I'd want to keep moving

it out slowly.

I hope you get a lot of suggestions as to help you decide the way to go.

[ ] yeast

Listmates,

My son (7) did well after 5 weeks of DMSA. When we added in the ALA,

things began to disintegrate. We have never recouped....The GSDL stool

analysis, which we have run 2x (once before and once since chelation),

showed yeast both times. But no clostridia. We were told to do yet

another round of nystatin., which we did.

I can't help but think that yeast continues to be an issue. Our son's

behavior has never improved again since ALA was added.

Should we be thinking about attacking the yeast another way? It has

never been suggested by a dr. to do anything other than nystatin....

Thanks.

I have been chelating my ASD son since Feb, he is almost 5. He is

GF/cf, corn, soy and free of many other things, poor guy. First I

want to say I am sorry for your sons regression w/ the addition of

LA. I have read some kids have problem w/ LA. Fortunately for my

son LA seems to help him improve.

My son has a definite yeast problem but with all my research

regarding mercury toxicity it seems to me that the yeast is there to

protect the body from the mercury. Therefore, I decided to only try

to control the yeast during chelation.

At one point I was addressing the yeast w/ Lavender oil , one or two

drop 3 days on 11 days off, a homeopathic remedy, limited addition

herbs. But even doing that I hated how crazy it got Jack, so, I

stopped treating the yeast and during chelation I upped Jack's

acidophilos, I am also doing NAET which I am sure helps. I am also

giving alot of milk thistle, vitamin c , b ,e and magnesium to clear

the liver.

I have recently started treating the yeast again w/ black walnut and

uva vursi and these things seem to be helping also. Jack has been a

bit crazy while treating the yeast but I think alot has cleared out

on its own. His stools are very normal looking now, they use to be

yellow and unformed. I believe the chelating is more important than

treating the yeast because it is the root of the problem. I am not

sure if what I am doing will work for all kids but my son makes

gains w/ evry chelation cycle.

One more thing, Every time my son had a set back, I was sure it was

the chelation and asit turns out it never was.

I also chelated my normal two year old for about 6 round because of

food allergies and his stools are pretty normal now.

Hi there list mates,

Lots of our children have trouble with on going high yeast, I would like to

hear from some of you who use natural supplements that are helping to fight

yeast and tell me what you are using and what mg. I know that pro-bio gold

and culterelle are also good products.

Hi Jane,

We used a low yeast diet, low sugar along with pro bio gold and colostrum(twice

a day each). We saw a LARGE drop in his yeast related numbers on the organic

acid test from great plains labs which we retested six months after using this

approach. We believe this approach worked well for us. Does your daughter

still have yeast issues even after a year of chelation and her doing so well?

:)

When we started to treat yeast a few weeks ago, my son had started with runny

nose 3 days into treatment that just recently went away. His actually turned

into full blown flu. He was very cranky and then turned into lethargy which

came along with the flu.

If your son has started with a runny nose it could be the yeast die off. Where

I live, it is hard to tell cause the weather is warm and the pollen in the air

is giving everyone trouble

I'm currently trying to get rid of yeast in my son. He's 2 1/3 years old

and has had at least 6 rounds of antibiotics. He was born with Spina Bifida

and had three surgeries before he was two weeks old. Other antibiotics were

given for Urinary Tract Infections caused by having to catheterise him. I

now give him cranberry concentrate and no UTI's for about a year or so.

Anyway, needless to say, he's full of yeast. I started giving him

acedopholus (one made for up to 2 year olds), garlic, vit. C, Colloidal

Silver and Grapefruit seed extract. I also just started giving him enzymes.

A day after starting him on this he go a runny nose. It's thick and dark

yellow. He's a bit grouchy and tired. Do you think I might have started to

strong? Should I have slowly tried to kill the yeast? Is it harmful to kill

it too fast? I've also been trying to watch his diet, but I'm wondering if

you have to follow a strict diet if you give enzymes and all the things I

mentioned. You all have been so helpful to me so far and hopefully, one

day, I'll be able to return the favor.

--Starr,

my sons bowl movements looked yeasty like proofed yeast and did smell

yeasty when we started the treatment. They are fine now. His urine

however did not smell strange. Also his bm's were long and snakey with

lines in them, I read somewhere that this possibly represented bowl

inflamation. They are of pretty normal size now. I have him on a low

but not entirely sugar free diet and he eats enerG gf/cf yeast free

bread. I also fresh squeeze lemon juice and add a splash of pear juice

just to sweeten it up a bit and then add water. I am on a yeast list

and was told that all juice exciept fresh squeezed is bad because it

is already fermenting but I cant fresh squeez all my juice so I

compromise. adding the lemon juice cuts the juice and gives it a

lemonade flavor. I dont give him any honey and just try to curb the

sugar as best as I can.

Good luck Patti

---Sharon,

here is a link to a yeast forum i am a member of. It is a general

forum not one specifically for autism. It has many knowledgeable

people that are very nice and helpful.

Patti,

What do you mean exactly by lines in them - was this mucus? Sam's are

long and snakey if they are formed at all and he has had a lot of

mucus in the past.

--the lines in them looked like indentions all the way down the bm. It

is hard to describe, let me see if I can give you a visual...kind of

like when you use that playdoh extruder, the one that you stuff

playdoh into and push on the handle and the playdoh comes out and it

has impressions in it from the sides of the mold. I hope I am getting

my point across. Can you kind of get what I am trying to describe?

He would sometimes get mucous in his bm's also (different from the

" lines " .
