Guest guest
Hi and everyone, You asked if a TENS unit requires authorization by a doctor. Here in the USA, yes, you must have an Rx from a physician to purchase a TENS unit from a medical supply store. The units are plainly marked to be dispensed by prescription only. Also, you must have an Rx yearly for the electrodes. These units are covered by most insurances; however, with Medicare, they will only pay for one (1) unit every five years. You are also limited to one set of wires per year. I have two different units, and contrary to what my doctor told me, there is a big difference between them. The first one I had, which I purchased through the doctor's office, provided little relief. Then I borrowed a unit from a friend, and there was a world of difference. I then got an Rx to purchase this unit, but Medicare refused to pay for it. I was stuck with a bill of $500.00. I strongly urge anyone considering purchasing a TENS unit to request the medical supply get it approved by your insurance before you take it home to use. That way, if it is denied, you won't have to pay for it if your finances are tight. Hope everyone is having a comfortable night.
