Hi JoAnn...When I weent to physical therapy for my back which was about

2-3 years ago I also got a T.E.N.S unit through them. Medicare approved

it. It was $595.00 and all I had to pay was $72.00. It works great for

me. I was told I would have to call the company that puts my TENS unit

to get the lead wires and pads. I haven't done that yet. I haven't used

my TENS unit for long time even though I've had bad days when I needed

it. The good ol' Vicodins do the job..:-}. Well I hope everyone is

having a good week.

CH>Hi and everyone,

CH>You asked if a TENS unit requires authorization by a doctor. Here in

CH>the USA, yes, you must have an Rx from a physician to purchase a TENS

CH>unit from a medical supply store. The units are plainly marked to be

CH>dispensed by prescription only.

CH>Also, you must have an Rx yearly for the electrodes.

CH>These units are covered by most insurances; however, with Medicare, they

CH>will only pay for one (1) unit every five years. You are also limited

CH>to one set of wires per year.

CH>I have two different units, and contrary to what my doctor told me,

CH>there is a big difference between them. The first one I had, which I

CH>purchased through the doctor's office, provided little relief. Then I

CH>borrowed a unit from a friend, and there was a world of difference. I

CH>then got an Rx to purchase this unit, but Medicare refused to pay for

CH>it. I was stuck with a bill of $500.00.

CH>I strongly urge anyone considering purchasing a TENS unit to request the

CH>medical supply get it approved by your insurance before you take it home

CH>to use. That way, if it is denied, you won't have to pay for it if your

CH>finances are tight.

CH>Hope everyone is having a comfortable night.
