Hi,

I don't have any advice on how to further pressure the publisher but

I commend you for speaking out. I think even speaking out in your

class (if you have online classmates?) and to the teacher can be very

influential. Every time you speak out to people you educate them and

they, in turn, may educate others. Thanks!

Maybe you could post the link to contact this person and/or publisher.

I think there are a bunch of us, including MEN like myself, who would

love to give alittle input to these idiots and see if we could help

them se REALITY

What is the publishing date of the book? I know that ideas about CFS/ME have

changed a lot in a short period of time. I think that it isn't so much the

publisher's responsibility, but the person in charge of the curriculum for the

class you are taking. It is up to them to ensure that the textbooks they use

have up to date and accurate information.

BTW, I have an older medical book at home that talks about women's health

issues and lists hysteria and frigidity as two key problems facing women. It is

no doubt that it was a man who authored the book. I bought it because it was

funny to me how stupid we all used to be. Too bad some are still that stupid.

The textbook is

Abnormal Psychology: An Integrated Approach, by H. Barlow and V. Mark

Durand.

There's a chapter about how psychological and social factors influence health.

There's a

fairly long item about CFS.

Hi,

Sorry I had forgotten to mention that--the publishing date is 2005.

OK, I'll do that, but I think you should read it first. I'll scan and post the

offending pages in

the next few days. (I hope that's legal--does anyone know? It's a few pages. If

it's not

legal, I'll just give the contact info)

Thanks. Yes, I have classmates. But that's just one class, out of the hundreds

or even

thousands who may be using this book or others that have the same info. I

noticed thata

lot of Web sites, even fairly new ones, that have general descriptions of many

illnesses,

are really bad too, some saying CFS and FMS are mental and/or related to

hypochondria.

These sites are where students go to learn more.

Paying $129.00 for the texbook to be told my own symptoms may be in my head was

truly

adding insult to injury!

Oh! I know this one! It's legal to " reprint " the offending textbook article,

as long as you cite your source and don't try to claim it as your own. However,

by the sounds of it, there would be no risk in anyone here saying that they

wrote such nonsense.

Hey Vicky,

Good for you!!

I would email the school and the prof. updated research medically-sponsored

studies and material, much of which has been posted on this site very recently,

and I would demand that the reference material they use be authored by an MD or

medical scientist.

I would then tell the school that I expected a refund of my money for the

text, at the very least, for the misinformation the are putting forth in the

name of education.

You have to pick and choose your battles, but I would also report them to the

dept. of education at whatever level it is that chooses their texts. And I

would make no secret of doing so. I'd ask them who that is, and who their atty

is. And at the very least, write a few simple letters (with appropriate cc's).

I would definitely call a couple of prominent docs and ask them to give the

headmaster of the school a call about it. It may not go anywhere, and it may

cause them a big fine. But, hopefully, it will force them to change their

behavior in choosing texts. In the meantime, if you do it right away, you may

be able to get them to add supplemental reading material for the class, to

counteract the damage they have done.

OK! Here's the info.

I didn't see a place to upload files to the site, so I slapped together a little

Web site with

the textbook info on CFS and the contact info of the publisher. They do actually

ASK for

feedback, so let's give 'em some!

Here's the URL:

Feel free to share what you're writing!

Wow! Those are great ideas. Thanks. I don't blame the school or the teacher. I

only blame

the authors and publisher. But you're right, the school should be a lot more

careful about

wht they're putting out there. I'm writing letters. For more info see:
