Dr. Kittley has some interesting ideas about weight loss. The basic diet is lots of vegetables, some fruits and whole grains, fish, poultry, lamb and pork. No dairy, beef, sugar, caffiene, white flour, except on one "Free" day per week. No artificial sweeteners at all. She advocates the use of soy milk and tofu in place of dairy "for those who can eat soy." I wonder if she is alluding to the fact that soy is not good for hypos or that many folks are allergic to it.

She recommends 1000-1500 mg of inositol (a B vitamin) and taurine (an amino acid) daily. And states that they are especially helpful for diabetics. Unfortunately, she does not give any documentation for this information, or for anything else in the book. Another interesting undocumented tidbit is her list of treatments for PCOS which includes "Armour Thyroid." The exclusion of certain foods have to do with their being common allergens. The chapter on hypothyroidism reveals some vital information on her thyroid diagnosis and treatment protocols: the

tests do not tell the whole story. Some people need Armour or Cytomel. She and her co-author (Nurse Bolen) are both on thyroid replacement. I don't think I will be following her food plan. But the book gives me a lot of food for thought in making my own food plan. I think I will go and Google "inositol, taurine, diabetes. . . ." Dr. Kittley is probably a good thyroid doctor. Pickle is going in as our guinea pig and will give us a full report. . . .if she comes out alive, that is. . . . Oink! <squeal> <pig scream> <evil laugh> <Hideous Pig Scream!> Oink!
