I hope there wernt any serious injuries. Yes they are very important and Ive learned to always be on my guard. He had happily sat in a booster seat for 2 straight weeks with a regular lap belt then I guess figured out that he could get out of a regular lap belt. What do you use? I went looking for ones that had 5pt restraints for over 40lb kids. I found one by britax that held up to 105 lbs in a 5pt but omg! $549.00!! Thats like an entire paycheck for us. He is currently over the 40lb weight limit for the 5pt restraint for his current carseat but Im doing the best I can I feel that untill I can get one with a higher weight limit its better to keep him in that and maybe get in a wreck and maybe something happen than having him crawling around loose in the car and increasing the chances or a wreck and more injury because he is loose. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Guest guest
This is a big issue for many of our kids! Our son was a contortionist and could get out of the 5-point seats without a problem. Once he got out, he was mad and the attack was on! I've been stopped by the police more than once but not yet ticketed. They all tell me to have him ride in the back seat because even though he's not buckled, it does provide some measure of protection. I've even went to the DPS asking for suggestions and they didn't have any. Seems to me this could fall under In-Home Training though. Sure wouldn't hurt to ask! Tonya Re: Re: Pull-ups co-op.... Guest guest
Tonya, We had the same issue with my son! He even tried to climb out the window when the car was moving! He also would get mad and, when he wasn't try to choke or hit me, he would try to open the door and leave the car...while we were traveling down the freeway. I was stopped many times, although usually I stopped first. But I couldn't hold him in the car and drive, and I was terrified that if he escaped, he would run out on the freeway and, well, you know what! It was really a nightmare. I thought I was the only one back then who ever had that issue. My son was not a passive kid in the least... nna > This is a big issue for many of our kids! Guest guest
Oh, no. My son got out of his car seat and pulled hair OUT of my head while I was driving. Fortunately we weren't on the freeway at the time. S. Re: Re: Pull-ups co-op.... Guest guest
Oh the memories! Only another parent of a child with autism would understand the relief you feel when you finally make it home on one of " those " days. I also rejoiced when the inside door handles broke on the back seat. We had child locks, but the stinker was smart enough to flip the switch under the door when I wasn't looking. Never did fix the handles! Tonya -----Original Message----- From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy nna Bond We had the same issue with my son! He even tried to climb out the window when the car was moving! Guest guest
We've had a few of those too. Usually follows a rough day at school. Now that our son is older we have it a lot less, but there is still occasional incidences. One good thing has come of it, he's learned the car dipping suddenly and the sound of the anti-lock brakes means mom's REAL pissed and to cool it. :-) Tonya Re: Re: Pull-ups co-op.... Guest guest
Hey, Tonya...when my son was 3, he kicked a huge hole in the dashboard of my car with his feet WHILE HE WAS IN HIS CARSEAT because we had to take a detour while taking his older sister to school. He had the darn route to school memorized, and he just totally flipped out when the road was closed and we had to go a different way. That was in the days when we were REALLY poor and my car was mostly held together with duct tape and rubber bands, anyway! He about destroyed that car, all the while he was IN his carseat. He even managed somehow on his second birthday to reach over from his carseat (now, remember, he is 14 now and this was before they told parents to always put the kids in the backseat because it was pre- airbag!), pulled down the gearshift on my car, put it into drive and ran the car into our house!!! And I was strapping him into the carseat at the time! (I didn't know that you didn't have to have your foot on the brake to shift gears...I thought you did! And I was standing outside the car on his side putting the restraints on him when he did it! He was a real stinker back then. I sometimes wonder how we lived through it! nna
