My experience with public pre-school is very limited but when I attempted to

put my son in one, I was told we either had to be economically disadvantaged

or within our household speak English as a second language in order to

qualify for enrollment--regardless if he was considered a child at risk for

being

developmentally delayed--this was before an official diagnosis. Then later

after AU diagnosis, I was told he could be placed in PPCD.

My experience with private pre-schools is that these commercially run

centers aren't always equipped or have the knowledge needed to care for a child

with special needs/autism but maybe they could perhaps do it with a shadow but I

don't think they would want the potential liability of that person not being

on their payroll or not being insured by them. I eventually placed my son in

a private pre-K program for children with learning differences/autism so he

started off in a class with 5 other kids having a range of disabilities like,

CP, PDD, ADHD, and autism but all were verbal and similarly abled. CReece

Country Home Learning Center is very good with children with special needs.

They are in Austin, but I don¹t know if they are also in Houston.

I know of two private preschools up here in The Woodlands that will accept

an autistic child with a shadow. Just his fall, we started doing this with

my almost 4 year old daughter and it is going extremely well. She loves the

school and I do feel it is helping her social development. My advice would

be to call around to the preschools in your area and ask them. In my case,

I just approached the director at my son's preschool, explained the concept

of shadowing, and assured her that the shadow would be helping the teacher,

not interfering. It may have helped that we had an existing relationship

with the school, but there is at least one other here also willing to do

this, so hopefully there will be one in your area too.

Good luck!

Are there any integrated preschools in the houston area?

Do the regular preschools allow autistic kids with an aide or shadow.

I live in southwest houston and would like to know if there are any

preschools that allow autistic kids aide or shadow. My son is 4 years

old. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Thanks much for your responses.

I am not sure how to hire a shadow? Are these people ABA therapists

with training how to shadow?

Thanks again.

My daughter attends an ABA clinic here in the Woodlands (The Shape of

Behavior) and one of their therapists is her shadow. I would definitely

look for someone who has received shadow training and if they have done it

before, even better. Maybe others have suggestions on how to find one?

WHY DON'T YOU LOOK INTO THE NETWORK SCHOOL, IT'S LOCATED IN THE MONTROSE

AREA AND LOOKS LIKE A VERY LOVING ENVIRONMENT, ON THE PROPERTY THEY ALSO

HAVE SPEECH CLASSES AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ALL IN THREE DIFFERENT HOUSES

ON THE SAME STREET. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH ATTENDING SPEECH THERE. HOPE THIS

HELPS...

I just moved here to the Woodlands (suddenly and unexpectedly!) and

I am interested in knowing which preschools you were talking about.

My son just turned three last month, and I do not even know where to

begin! You may e-mail me privately if you prefer.

Where is " The Network School " and how do I get more information on

them? I live in the area and need a preschool for my son (no ASD

diagnosis, but language delay and some ADD tendancies). We are at

Including Kids in Humble. Fantastic school (and it is TEA

accredited), but a very long haul every day. Is The Network School

an actual school or a behavioral/therapy center? Thanks so much!

Corinne,

I'm not sure if you know, but typing in all caps is equivalent to screaming.

It would be great if you could take the caps lock key off.
