I've heard the same things you mention here. The attitude is also common amongst the young in parts of Africa, at least according to a documentary made by a black British journalist.

I also know that some people will deliberately spread AIDS and I think that must be far more common that is commonly believed. Some years ago, a man from one of the big cities came to the small town near my place in Alabama and infected at least 8 women with HIV. No telling if that man was ever caught or if he "visited" other cities, too. It wouldn't surprise me if he had. Now, 8 women might not sound like a lot, but this town has a population of about 400 at the most. That's a 2% infection rate. One also has to wonder how much those 8 women spread the HIV before they found out they had it.

Pretty much all STD's are making a comeback, and have been for the last 15 years or so. Many that were on the verge of vanishing, like syphilis, are being seen again in numbers. This rate is rising fastest amongst the young, meaning teens and college age. Given the kinds of movies being made in many colleges, and the peer pressure to be a slut (because being a slut is THE way to popularity), it doesn't surprise me. Even more, a friend of mine had legal issues a while back that, in the course of investigation, revealed the public Middle School was basically a brothel with boys and girls as young as 12 having sex in the bathrooms. This was so common, none of the other kids even paid much mind.

Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if the rates of HIV/AIDS and other diseases weren't far higher than the official numbers claim.

PS: It was determined that my friend was innocent of the charges and was actually the victim of a kind of con.

I also worked with someone who HAS AIDS. Not HIV but AIDS. He's heterosexual, and is required to disclose to anyone he sleeps with that he has AIDS. It hasn't stopped him from getting girlfriends, nor has it stopped them from sleeping with him. And yes, when he comes in wearing a new girlfriend on his arm each month, and they kiss each other on the lips in front of my face, and make sexual innuendos in front of me, I can pretty well guess what they are up to in the off hours, although I do not need to guess because during bull sessions after work he told all of us.

No, we cannot prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. It is an impossibility as long as these attitudes exist.
