Rocket Attack on S. Korean PRT Base in Afghanistan Being Examined: Gov't

The rocket attack in Afghanistan Wednesday on a construction site where the head

office of South Korean civilian aid workers is located might have been waged by

Taliban insurgents, but the case is still under scrutiny, the foreign ministry

here said Tursday.

Four rockets were launched toward the construction site in Charikar, the capital

of northern Parwan province, but only one landed there without inflicting much

harm, local news reports said quoting ministry officials.

" There is a possibility that it was an act of Taliban insurgents or some other

militant groups based there, " foreign ministry spokesman Kim Young-sun told

reporters in a briefing. An American bomb disposal squad has been sent to the

site for inspection, Kim said.

Motivations behind the attack have yet to be assessed, the spokesman added.

The South Korean provincial reconstruction team (PRT), tasked with helping

better lives of Afghans with reconstruction efforts in the war-ravaged Central

Asian country, is set to kick off its activities in Parwan, north of Kabul,

Thursday. Some 100 civilians, 40 police officers and 321 soldiers will be sent

in stages this year.

After being stationed in Afghanistan for five years, South Korean troops pulled

out of the war-torn nation in 2007 when two of the 23 South Korean hostages were

killed by Taliban insurgents.
