Tracey, that might not be enough for you since you do not eat meat. I

am currently not supplementing beyond my Centrum. If I ever get my

butt to the lab I will let you know how I am doing, but I eat meat.

Last time I checked I was fine, though.

Tracey

The following are Parts of an article in Beyond Change 2002 (Sally

Myers RD,CPT)

50 mg of elemental iron seems to work well for short limb bypass

whereas the long limb (which we are) bypass seem to need 150 to 200

mg of elemental iron on a daily basis.

200 mg. of Vitamin C should be taken with iron to increase the

absorption.

In humans, some of the roles iron participates in are:

*Oxygen binding and transport

*Enzyme reactions

*Helps develop neurotransmitters in the brain i.e. serotonin,

dopamine and norepinephrine (these neurotransmitters play a

significant role in food cravings)

*Assist in converting beta-carotene to Vitamin A.

*Helps break down cholesterol

*helps detoxify medications

*Assists in making collagen

*Takes part in Vitamin D activation.

Foods that block the absorption of iron are coffee and tea, whole

grains, bran, legumes, spinach (high fiber in general), Calcium.

Foods that increase the absorption of iron are Meats and vitamin C.

(so it's a good idea to add these when eating foods that hurt iron

absorption)

Observation seems to indicate ferrous sulfate is not effective for

WLS patients. Iron in the form of Ferrous Fumerate, Gluconate or

polysaccharide appear to be better absorbed post-surgically.

Prescription use of Trinsicon, Chromagen Forte and Niferex have

proven effective for many patients.

My Note: Please remember Iron Overload can be serious so it's best

to use Iron supplementation under a doctors advice.

Hi Everyone,

I am restarting to take the ADEKs again.Do I still need to take an

additional multivitamin with that? I heard all the talk about iron.Do I still

need iron? Since I have had a hysderectomy 9 years ago? I havent been told

anything about my iron levels in the past. My main thing has been my vit.D

level..I do need to have my labs drawn again.I am over due for them.I am alittle

afraid to have them done.Because we have been going through some hard times in

the last 6 months.Sometimes we have run out of food.So I know I havent gotten my

protein on a daily basis.Plus in the last 4 months having gone cold turkey off

the antidepression meds. Its been hard for me to figure out whats effecting me?

The lack of food or the lack of meds??? But its finally getting better..So I'm

going to Wal Mart to tomorrow to shop and get more vitamins...

Thanks,

Just a note to add to Jo's great info.

Dr K has me on 264 ml of liquid iron. He said that it is almost

impossible for us (DS'rs) to take to much iron.

My boss (who has dr. in pharmacology) could not believe the amount

that Dr K said I should take. But he is ordering it for me in bulk.

Nice to have an " in " . He also orders my ADEKs for me too, which I now

have to take.

**Hi ! ADEKs is a multivitamin...but it is limited. When we

had our surgery we were told to take a good multivitamin. As our

individual labs indicate, some of us are told to " ADD " ADEKs. So

unless Dr. K says to use ADEKs " Instead " of a multivitamin I would

take both.**

I heard all the talk about iron.Do I still need iron? Since I have

had a hysderectomy 9 years ago? I havent been told anything about my

iron levels in the past.

**Since you no longer have periods then you were not instructed to

take iron. Iron toxicity can be a real problem. On the other hand I

have seen a whole bunch of people develop anemia...Men included who

of course don't have periods. I wouldn't take an individual Iron

supplement without labs that indicate you needed it...but

I " personally " would take a multi with iron included until my labs

said I was getting too much.**

My main thing has been my vit.D level..I do need to have my labs

drawn again.I am over due for them.I am alittle afraid to have them

**Bottom line...What you NEED to take or don't NEED to take all

hinge on your labs. A little afraid to have them done??? I would

be scared shit-less NOT to have them done! I would be scared that I

was letting a little problem develop into an expensive long drawn

out problem. The sooner you know about a deficiency the easier it

is to correct it. Plus you may be worried for nothing...your labs

will tell the tale.**

**..my heart bleeds for you. I understand how impossible it

can be to afford things like labs and vitamins when you can't even

afford to eat. But as soon as you can, please get your labs done.

Please make your supplements and protein a high priority. Remember

protein does not have to be in the form of Steak. Beans and rice

are cheap, filling and together create a complete protein. Will you

use Protein drinks??? Perhaps some of us have some protein powders

hanging around that we didn't use, like or finish...if we sent them

to you would you use them?***

Thanks Marta! I'll keep that in mind. Maybe I'll be additional

iron just in case.

Hi Jo!

Well, I am definitely not taking enough iron, then! It's not even

close to 50 mg. But, 50mg sounds awfully high compared to the US

RDA. I guess when I'm done with this free sample of vitamins, I'll

just go back to my usuals to be safe.

Hugs!
