Parrish, I retired from nursing January 2000. RA set in my back

and it was very difficult to walk from one nurses station to the

other. Since retiring my back has only got worse.

Hi all,

Would be interested in to hear what you all do (or

did) for jobs.

For those of you who no longer work, what was reason

with your RA that caused you to stop?

I work in marketing and do a lot on the computer (desk

work). The thought of not working is scary.

Just trying to get a perspective.

Thanks & good night!

I'm a nurse and was working as a quality improvment consultant for

nursing homes. The treavel is what was killing me. I had put over

a 1000 miles on my carin June with just day trips. I quit, and next

Monday (after a month off to just relax and recupe)I am going back

to work in the same field but at a single nursing home with a boss

who knows about the RA from the beginning.

Hi Parrish,

I was a self employed medical transcripitonist for the last five

years that I worked and before that worked for a medical practice.

I got done because my hands were so bad I could not type more than a

page at a time and it was excruciating to do so. I also could not

do my own hair, bathe myself, had difficulty dressing and on and

on. I do very little cooking, I don't grocery shop now or anything

like that really. My family is very supportive. I have three

children ages 6, 12 and 15. I won my disabilty after they finally

figured out what was wrong with me almost two years ago. It is not

nearly as much as I was making, but it is way better than nothing!

My doctor told me to quit when they figured out my diagnosis and i

cried with relief. it takes me forever just to type these responses

and/or emails. i am constantly correcting my spelling because it

bugs me to make mistakes, lol.

I am a secretary/inside sales/chief cook and bottle washer at a

company in Dallas, automotive aftermarket industry. I'm a single mom

with one still in college so retirement is not on the horizon. Some

days it's beyond difficult to get up and come to work but God is

faithful, He keeps me going when I think I can't. (fibro/ra/w.lupus

Well, let's see.... When I was 14-15, I worked for a crop dusting service

making planes, driving trucks and other vehicles, and 'flagging' in the rice

fields. That was hard work, running through water and rice grass to get

'under' the plane and wave a 2'x3' flag so the pilot can see me, and dodging

snakes at the same time. While in college, I did my part time gas station

duty. In the USAF, I was in Communications and installed almost all comm

centers in Cheyenne Mountain. I was in for a total of 8 years, some of it in

SouthEast Asia.

I worked for a company designing and making electromechanical

one-of-a-kind's and prototypes for the oil industry and mining and forestry

industries. I traveled the world helping and supervising my servicemen, and

worked up to middle management as International Service Manager. Things were

great, the kids were out, I was making good money, and had a respectable

job. Then the roof fell in. I awoke one morning with all my body in

excruciating pain! My GP didn't want me traveling until we at least got the

RA stabilized, and that started my real problems. Since I couldn't travel,

my effectiveness would be diminished, but my boss promised as long as I

could answer the phone, it will work. I would get a stenographer-secretary

or whatever it took. That sounded good to me, but then I was told I had to

park in the rear of the building away from the entrance ramp, and had to

climb a steep set of steps with no hand rails to get into the building, and

then walk the length of the building to get to my office. I went up and down

the steps on hands and feet, that was the only way. Then, of course, I was

demoted with a huge drop in pay even though my medical bills were

skyrocketing, and my 'office' was moved to the furthest from the bathroom or

the rest of my people. I'd been working there for almost 20 years. From the

onset of RA to being 'laid off' was almost a year. You see, everybody has

arthritis.

Hi Parrish:

I was a full time mom, and part-time jewelry designer,

making handmade one-of-a-kind jewelry for a friend's

retail business. After dx, I tried to continue

working, but due to the pain, stiffness and swelling

in my wrists, hands and fingers, with increased pain

on using my jewelry tools, I decided that I had to

give up my creative outlet, and our extra income,

rather than further damage my hands. I miss it, but

my hands are still functioning well with no x-ray

evidence of joint destruction, so I am happy that I

made the decision I did.

I am a nurse but haven't worked since 2001 due to health. My last

job was hospice after my part time oncology clinic position was

cancelled. I still have an active license.
