C. , Ph.D. once wrote, “The single most remarkable fact of human existence is how hard it is for human beings to be happy.†Suffering is ubiquitous and can prevent people from living their lives in meaningful and even expansive ways. Many current psychotherapies work directly to change problematic thoughts and feelings associated with these negative life events. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a new model of behavioral treatment that emphasizes acceptance of emotion and thought while maintaining a focus on positive behavior change that is meaningful and consistent with personal values. ACT uses a variety of verbal, experiential and homework techniques to help clients make experiential contact with previously avoided thoughts, feelings, and sensations, without excessive verbal involvement and control—and to make powerful life enhancing choices. The seminar will discuss and demonstrate ACT techniques that may be broadly useful for intervening with multi-problem clients dealing with issues such as anxiety, substance abuse, depression, PTSD and human struggle. The seminar will provide clinicians with a basic understanding of ACT skills, and with personal experiences that will allow further development of these skills based on their application. Outline Part I: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Theory and Concepts Human Language, experiential avoidance and its role in psychopathology Dominance of the conceptualized past and future Cognitive fusion and avoidance of self The problems of attachment Lack of values clarity and inaction Our minds do not know what is good for us: F.E.A.R. Fusion: holding thoughts as literal Evaluation: putting it in the evaluated Avoidance: learned behaviors and social constructions Reason-giving: believing our stories for why we do what we do The problem of more, better and different The paradox of what client’s are seeking Feeling better versus feeling better Acceptance and Commitment as an alternative to control Part II: Application of ACT Treatment The 6 core components of ACT for psychological and behavioral flexibility Acceptance Letting go of the agenda of control Willingness to experience Willingness as a choice, not a desire Present Moment Discovering “NOW†Mindfulness: Processes of observation Relationship and being in the moment Defusion Fusion: getting caught in “Mind†Defusing: responding to thoughts and emotions in terms of workability Self-as-Context Using present moment awareness to build self-as-context Distinguishing experiential content from context Contacting the continuous sense of self Values Defining personal values that give meaning to life Choice versus decision and process versus outcome Linking behavior change to chosen values Committed Action Daily goals and facing barriers Acceptance of additional barriers as a consequence of committed action Living a more rewarding, full and vital life Objectives Describe the psychopathological impact of experiential avoidance. Explain how human language participates in suffering and affects our relationship with private internal experiences. Describe direct treatment implications related to experiential avoidance and non-acceptance. Describe the major steps in ACT. Explain how values homework is used to support behavior change.
