Guest guest
Misty, Sounds like calasus (sp) to me. If you aren't used to manual labor with bare hands...this could be it. Try putting some udder balm on your hands when you are done milking and botteling. Good luck, Trisha in WA
Guest guest
Mine doe the same thing, worse in the winter. I think it is from all the washing of jars, buckets, and hands that is associated with milking. The skin on my pointer fingers get deep cracks in the also. Just farmer hands.LOL Nina Shady 80 AcresMoran, Texas ADGA Purebred Nubians
Guest guest
Hi, I use castor oil, thick and straight on the nipples of my goats at times, put a big drop on my hands and massage while I milk......this keeps the nipples supple and my hands nice...TA on 7/9/06 7:01 PM, Misty G at oceanmistrabbitry@... wrote: Hi, I was just wondering about something that is happening to my hands since I have started working with goats. The skin on the palms of my hands, mostly on my fingers, will not come clean. LOL I know some of you are laughing, but this is like some sort of fungus or something... it will not scrub off, bleach off, rinse off...and I am getting these deep crevices in the skin, some of them hurt. It started off in just a few places and is spreading across my hands. any clues, other than hard work, as to what could cause this? Guest guest
We just started milking cows in April, and we use gloves so that we don't have any pre/post dip stains on our hands- never have a problem with our hands- you may want to try that??? You can get gloves that aren't latex, so.... Just a thought. Tara O.
Guest guest
Ok hmmm how do I describe this.... this is only on the palm side of my fingers on one hand. Not caluses... LOL pretty sure of what those look like. And it's not on the whole finger... just on the bottom 2 sections/ pads of them. It's like they are permanently dirty...in just little sections and deep down in the crevices. It started out on my pinky finger along the edge of it and has spread onto the other fingers of that hand. I have tried using a mild bleach solution and scrubbing with a toothbrush, didn't touch it. I have tried using lotion, Udder cream, etc. Won't touch it. Oh and some parts of it are sensitive to the touch. Thanks Misty
Guest guest
If it's just on your hands? Then I would suspect contact dermatitis, fancy way to say something you put your hands on/in disagrees with living skin cells. One question though- have you had any medications in the last month? Especially antibiotics? The reason I ask, is an allergic reaction can occur and what you describe is a symptom. If I get my hands into a cleaner called 'greased lightening' which is a great degreaser and kitchen cleaner it just eats my hands up. They will peel and chap something aweful. And, sometimes if conditions are just right my hands will get chapped and once skin is broken, it just gets worse and worse. Are you using a dairy cleaner to wash up? They have potent agents to suspend milkfat so are hard on your hands. So are the acid rinse. Commerical bleach has lye in it so it's going to be hard on your hands, too. I would get a box of nitrile or latex gloves (the nitrile is tougher and doesn't tear as easy) and use them whenever I am washing, getting my hands wet or into any chemical, etc..... And, I would get a good name brand skin cream to use at night. You want some moisture on your skin, so right after bath/shower is good time to use. There as some great products that Gempler carries- Burt's Bees Hand Salve, Bag Balm, Wool Wax Creme, O'Keefe's Working Hands, Dermanique, are all good time tested products. www.gemplers.com If after seven days of trying this (using gloves, hand cream, etc...), you don't see any improvement, then I would consult a dermatoligist. Guest guest
My 8-yr-old Grand-daughter had this on her hands when she came to live with me. I took her to the Dr. and he put her on a very simple treatment of Aveeno lotion after every time she washed and before bed daily. I got the menthol external analgesic one. It took some time but it worked. Her hands cleared up and she is fine. Guest guest
We have been using vinegar to dip. Approved by organic standards and doesn't leave stains on me or the cow. Guest guest
I just remembered something. My mil had a thing on her hands like what you describe. What eventually cleared it up was soaking them in warm whey daily. Took a few days but it never came back.I use this treatment for many skin things. Psoriasis, excema etc. Works really well at drawing out thistles too. Guest guest
You might also try soaking at least once a day with zinc sulfate solution. Dr. Naylor's hoof treatment is zinc sulfate, water, and soap. This solution dries and is good for fungus. It sounds like you have a fungal infection. It sure ain't labeled for people, but I have had excellent success on stubborn stuff that grows in our hot, humid summers- Blu Lotion or Koppertox, both will do the job. I have used both on myself when everything else tried failed to do the job.
