Guest guest
This is kind of curious. I do not make pets of my stock, any more than you can help it with bucket raised calves. Yet the most amazing thing. I do not put a halter on to milk, just a little feed and my son or I sit down and do it. My current cow is a 1200 pound Red Holstein/Milking Shorthorn. Not as feed efficient as a Jersey, but a great cow. We just put a new calf on her last Friday, she did not like it much. ON Wednesday she butted the calf through a 1/4 plywood wall. Yesterday I stood in the stall while the calf nursed. When he hunched and got a little too rough I put my hand on her rib cage and gently rubbed her up and down, I did not " pat " . I could feel her tremble, but she did not kick. My son stayed with her tonight and she did fine. We found that if the calf does not get on the quarter we left for him, he hunches to get her to let down, of course there is not any milk there, so getting him on target is important. Many times, finding out what is troubling the animal is very important.
