Thank goodness. You (the industry) can do whatever you want at any time. EPA is spending federal funds to promote public health. The EEF may be teaching some basic IAQ 101 to those who don't know much about it, but they are the blatant propagandists when it comes to their role in the IAQ field. We have many learned professionals in this group, some quirky activists and a few people who just can't seem to bash around the EEF at every opportunity. I am NOT saying they don't make it easy on occasions, but have we really given into believing one-sided opinion pieces in trade group newsletters or the suspect statements put our government? I was involved in this EPA project as well as other IAQ projects the EEF works on and let me share a little insight about what I noticed. First, the EEF program IS approved by the lenders and insurance carriers with the use of the EPAs I-BEAM software now a part of it. This is what the EPA contract called for and what was delivered. I use the EEF O & M Plan and training for my commercial and multi-family clients who are mandated to implement a program for their insurance carriers or who are simply looking to practice good risk management techniques. Contrary to what Mudarri of the EPA now says, here are a few of his quotes from emails he sent to the advisory group working on this project. " This is quite impressive. Congratulations. " " I am particularly pleased with the level of participation that you have developed among the various groups in the building industry " " I want to thank Rick Bates for coming down and sharing with us his communication ideas. These are certainly good principles for us (the EPA) to follow and we have already begun to do so. " Is seems the EPA only became negative after hundreds of calls to him and other EPA folks from the IAQA newsletter staff. Mudarri also wanted to dictate what the final product would like, not what we (the industry) agreed it should be. When we completed this project, we were all asked to provide some quotes to use in the new programs promotion. Here are a few of those: “This has been a worst-case scenario for the insurance industry,” emphasized Mark J. , the environmental practice leader at Rutherfoord Insurance. “There have been too many cost unknowns and liability questions to deal with so the industry has turned very conservative in developing the language for policies. Having our insured take the EEF training and implement their plan has provided a way for us to write those policies and show a tangible risk reduction to the carriers. Now, through our EEF trained subsidiary, Faulkner & Flynn, we will use the expanded IAQ program that includes the EPA I-BEAM software to do the same. This is a very positive step.” “We have enjoyed working with the diverse and highly-qualified sponsors of this important initiative to develop guidelines, tools and training programs to comprehensively address indoor air quality issues that relate to property management and construction, particularly those related to water intrusion and mold prevention. This valuable work, should not only benefit the risk management programs of our insurance and real estate customers. but also help to more fully define best management practices for the industry.” Said Gregg Shields, Vice President of Risk Control for XL Environmental, a division of XL Specialty Insurance Company Dave Dybdahl, Director for the ERRA commented, “The insurance industry has been looking for an expansion of the EEF program to incorporate additional industry input and EPA guidance – this is what we know have”. “Anything we can do to help urban property owners manage their risk—and help insurers to underwrite risk—will improve the urban insurance market,” added Suzanne Reade, UIPI president. My bottom line is this: Like the EEF or not, they have been around for years and years involved in IAQ work. They have programs that the insurance and lenders recommend and that attorneys rely on in court. I was impressed with Troy s actions on this contract as he was focused on what is best for business people involved in IAQ, the people who stand to be affected by IAQ issues and not once did he give into the pressure the EPA was putting on the group to deliver a final product containing more " government " material than what we agreed should be in the program. How about we stick to IAQ info on this forum and leave the association propaganda to their newsletters. I just want to know who the "Quirky Activists" are! Because I might like to meet them. lol Seriously, there was reference made to pending litigation in one of the posts on this thread. The implication as I interpret it, appeared to be a somewhat thinly veiled threat of this is an issue to be discussed no further on this board. As an industry, we should be aware of the many organization's " credibility, " and like it or not, should also work " with " the EPA. I don't enjoy paying my taxes, etc., but they ARE the Government which does hold water... To answer your first 'beef': I DO know that Emma, who posted the comment asking EEF members NOT to post on this site, is speaking on behalf of EEF. Perhaps I did not articulate what I meant to say properly. I do not think it is an appropriate thing to do to tell members of your organization NOT to participate, post, or otherwise be a part of a forum such as this one. Now-to ask them not to post speaking on EEF's behalf would be a different matter, but that is not what was said. I, myself, have become a member of EEF...not because I like them or dislike them, but rather because I wanted to attend one of their on- line seminars pertaining to an O & M Plan, since I was beginning to write my own. Therefore, I feel that my comment about EEF telling their members, which includes ME, NOT to post on this site was not the decision I would have made. As far as the seminar I attended, which I believe someone else had made a post wondering what the seminars were like...it really did not give me any information I didn't already know, and the O & M Plan seemed inadequate for the needs of my clients. This is just my personal opinion. I'm sure there are those out there who found the seminar to be interesting and the O & M Plan to be adequate for their needs; is just wasn't for me. I should say that in my limited experience, Emma is a lovely person. She helped me register for the EEF class, and was quite delightful. Now, to respond to your second gripe: I DID list my name and company name. Quite frankly, I did not feel my company address or phone number were necessary at the time(there's always on-line yellow pages if you really wanted to track someone down). BUT, I do not think it is fair to ask people who were involved with the program to also stay silent. The lenders and insurance companies loved our final product and from personnel knowledge of the last class, the attendees also love it. I say the EEF should stand up for itself, you have a longer history than most groups in this field and nothing to hide. Mr. Beck has passionately defended the EEF; I'd sincerely like to learn more about his experience. 2. One of the more critical considerations in paying for ANY training must be the abilities and experience of the instructor. The most recent EEF solicitation that I received stated: " ...this class is being taught by a 30 year veteran of the industry, Mr. Bates... " Mr. Beck, you've been very involved with this group, so you'll undoubtedly know Mr. Bates. The EEF provides no backup to the above claim, and I can't find any additional information on Mr. Bates (too many genealogy sites!) Would you please tell us where we can read up on his background and credentials? Thank you. 3. I can't seem to find this web-based course on the ABIH site (CM point queries: http://www2.abih.org/query/CM_courses.asp). I see a Home-Study course, and 2004, 2005 approvals for "Mold Awareness & Water Intrusion - Developing and [sic] O & M Plan Course". Bill or Emma: would you please provide the ABIH Course Approval Number? Thank you. 4. Based on recent behavior, it's clear that Toy doesn't give a hoot about securing future EPA contracts. Doesn't this seem a bit odd? Perhaps the "hand that feeds" has changed, but why would any group, after years of working with/for the EPA, make a series of decisions that are certain to permanently sever that relationship?
