Guest guest
Dear Shyam, To name a few areas where spirituality, philosophical views of life and death are assuming increasing importance in modern medicine - End of life issues, Quality of life issues and Do not resuscitate orders in terminally ill patients. I am sure you are aware of the emerging subspeciality of mind body medicine where yoga is centerstage...incidentally yoga is not a bunch of physical exercises. In USA the National Institutes of Health is funding so many studies and trials in these areas of medicine including meditation and its healing power. Instead of abhoring spirituality topics lets follow the American way of tactfully keeping religion out though spirituality might be intertwined with religion. Another emerging speciality is of medical ethics and there are nationally renowned bioethicists who are consulted in difficult cases or in law suits in quasi euthanasia situations. So my dear friend....spirituality is centerstage not only in medicine but in modern world as well. A good physician is one who heals the body & mind and is not oblivious to the spirit. Each of us should consciously keep religious references or beliefs out of these discussions and if someone slips he can be gently reminded of the same. To me its seems such an irony that we are so caught up in the materialistic aspects of medicine that we sometimes become oblivious to the basic tenets of medicine such as compassion and service and caring of the human spirit. Debates are not unhealthy -- going after each other's necks is.....taking things too personally is...not being a sport is.... Dear friend,I represent one of the majority, who is active and so felt the need to butt in. I understand that u very much like to discuss Spiritual and Philosophical viewpoints and would like this site to add some views on this topics as well. But,dear Ashok,I agree to Kishoreda's viewpoint, that although these views r universal, the religious flavour gets added to such views very soon, and a couple of mails later, the debate begins, which has too much of sparks flying all over, resulting in either the moderator himself or someone coming in to pacify the discussions, like it so happened the other day, when an extremely docile contributor,Ravi Kumar, who always swears allegiance to Bacardi, and other heavenly spirits, before writing, too got extremely emotional, when NASA beamed pictures were asked to be commented by another writer...... I personally have come to the conclusion,(I maybe definitely wrong, from ur angle),that Religion,Philosophical and Spiritual views,ARE A VERY PERSONAL MATTER,and must not find place to discuss on a public platform. Thanks.
