Norton System Works includes the above and has a registry cleaner, disk doctor, Norton GoBack, One button check, and a number of other utilities. I'm using Norton System Works 2005 (pirated) right now, and have already purchased NSW 2006 @ 3300 from Bangalore. I switched back to Norton in Feb when my system was invaded by a host of Internet Worms (199 infections found) using AVG Free on the Home PC... I think it is worth the investment. I think, losing all your data on the computer is only slightly less momentous than losing your spouse. Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Share Posted May 1, 2006 Kishore Sir, I agree with you.. its very traumatic losing all your data... previously, I had a celeron and it crashed on me suddenly after serving me faithfully for 3 years... and I lost all my documents, everything that I had written (papers, presentations, photos) and also a huge music collection....!!! I had made the mistake of not backing up my data elsewhere... so, if this is to be a lesson for you guys, back up your data in someplace where it can remain safe and you can access it from anywhere. there are a couple of ways by which you can do this: 1) You can upload your important documents in yahoo briefcase, It has a pretty decent storage capacity and you can store your word documents, excel spreadsheets, scanned documents, photos and what not? just go to http://briefcase.yahoo.com and sign up. the advantage is that you can access your data from anywhere. 2) Back up your documents on portable media like writable CD's... but there are reports that CD's too get spoilt in a matter of time.. we dont know if they will be good 10 years or 20 years down the line. so, you can also use portable USB drives, which are not too expensive or burn your data on rewritable DVD's 3) windows has an option by which you can back up your entire hard disk. You have to go to the system utility tools and you will find this option there 4) If you are working on a document and you don't want to lose it... at the end of the day, before you turn your computer off or log off, E-mail the document to yourself... so, even if you for some reason cannot retreive it from a CD or your computer, you have it in your E-mail I have learnt the hard way, that it is essential to do these things..... so, everyone, if you are writing papers, thesis, books or anything... remember " BACKUP is the most important thing " these are my two cents of computer knowledge for the day cheers Ameet 1993 > Wow! Spyware and viruses are a trouble only to PC users... macintosh operating systems based computers still (and thankfully) dont have spyware to slow them down or viruses to corrupt files. Unfortunately, majority of computers in the real world are windows based PC's and they are very prone to attacks by spyware. So, here are my tips on " preventing spyware " as prevention is better than cure 1) Intall a good pop-up blocker on your computer. windown XP has the capability to do so via the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape navigator. Make sure you have the pop-up blocker installed on your web- browser 2) Make sure you limit the amount of stuff you download from the web. downloading illegal Mp3 songs and games makes your system vulnerable to spyware. When you download something like songs you cannot check if that file is corrupted with a virus or spyware 3) Do not succumb to temptation and click on " advertisements " on the webpages you see, for example, adverts like " win a free iPOD " etc. these are also some of the means that your computer can have spyware and virus infestation 4) Beware of spam E-mails. Google mail is much better in this regard than other e-mail providers. 5) If there is a particular E-mail id that you use very regularly, then its much better to use a POP E-mail account and configure the same to MS Outlook or Outlook Express on a PC (or Entourage on a Mac). Doing this will prevent you from all the advertisements and also the junk mail that you usually get on your hotmail and yahoo accounts. 6) If multiple people in the household are using the same computer, then it would be good to create multiple user accounts for the same computer systems, The adults can be the administrators, so that you can control the stuff that is being downloaded from the computer As we all know, prevention is better than cure, so if we take these steps, then it will keep your beloved computer system free from spyware, and you can safely surf the net and increase the productivity of your machine for many many years to come... till the version of windows that you use becomes outdated. When I was using a PC,, I have used spybot and its a very good tool for preventing spyware on your computer. I agree with Ravin sir that you should invest in a good anti-virus program. One last tip, which I find very very useful: schedule a particular day of the week, when you have your day off as " computer maintenance day " . It could be a couple of hours on that day...as for me, its usually Saturday morning when I do the same. Now on the computer maintenance day, you have to do the following: 1) Make sure that your anti-virus program is updated. If not, update it using the instructions that came with the program 2) Run your anti-virus 3) Update your anti-spyware program 4) Run it. 5) Defragment your hard disc (very important again) 6) Check your hard drive and organize all the files that you are using into folders, so that you can find them. As a rule of thumb, only minimum icons should be on your desk top, to make it look clutter free and accessible. Keep the files that you are currently working on on the desktop.. everything else should go in separate marked folders on your hard drive. Everything that you DON'T need goes to the recycle bin 7) Organize your E-mails. Your e-mail is full of junk and forwards which you dont need to refer again.Again, organize your E-mails in marked folders (eg: " MGIMS group " , " Friends " , " Family " , " work " , etc) Delete the ones you dont require. Your inbox should contain only the most current E-mails 8) Back up all your important data. I know this may sound a bit obsessive, but then it would be really good for your computer if you schedule one day in a week, that too only for a couple of hours to do the maintenance that I have said. We should remember that our computer, like all our worldly possessions is an investment and its a tool to increase our productivity... therefore, we have to take care of it. Spybot almost once or twice /wk. Also a cybersitter version 9 program lets me monitor what my kids access and also blocks the internet/sites when we want it.
