Guest guest
I'd find someone (most likely a behavior therapist or consultant) who will go into the school to observe. If a " behavior " only presents itself at school, it's typically the environment or how they're working with the child. If nothing else, observing him in the setting where the problems are occurring, especially if he doesn't know that's the goal, could help shape what the therapist would do with him. Jill Hudson, jill@... -- , might be a good choice. While I haven't had direct experience with her yet, I spoke with a mother who was extremely happy with the work Jill is doing with her son. She said that Jill observed her son for a full day at school before working with him and has created clever and effective, yet fun, activities for working on targeted behaviors. Guest guest
Dr. Nuche (pronounced new-chee). She's amazing and has been through a lot with us. She's off Hillcrest and 635, right down 75. Her number is . I know she spent many years working in schools and at Children's Medical Center. _____ From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy [mailto:Texas-Autism-Advocacy ] On Behalf Of juliajpely Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 4:17 PM To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Therapist Recommendation Hi all! My name is AJ, and I am mom to three kids, two of whom are on the spectrum. My 10-year-old son was diagnosed with Asperger's at age 5, and has been under the care of a truly amazing pediatric neurologist since then. However, we are realizing that we should look for a professional who can work with him on behavioral issues relating to his overwhelming anxiety. (Surprisingly enough, this presents only at school -- never at home -- the result, I suppose of having a very structured, " safe " setup at home.) My first question is: am I looking for a child psychologist, behavioral therapist, licensed counselor, or what? My son gets once-a-month in-home training through the school district, with speech at school as well. We don't want a psychiatrist who will just prescribe meds (been that route). And my second question is: does anyone have a reputable professional they can recommend (someone with familiarity with ASDs)? We live in North/Far North Dallas on the edge of . Thanks in advance...and thanks for the wisdom I get from this whole group! Guest guest
I can't give you any names - I'm sorry, we're kinda new to this process -- but I was wondering who is your pediatric neurologist? I would like to take my son to see a good one - we pay out of pocket for most doctor visits, so I can't afford to see a doctor who is going to tell me what I already know! Thanks! Guest guest
What area are you looking for one in? I can tell you who NOT to see, and that's Kelfer at Cook Children's in Ft. Worth. I was and still am, very unhappy about my experience with him. Guest guest
, We go to see Dr. Van at Texas Child Neurology in Plano...we got the recommendation from our pediatrician (in whom I don't have a lot of hope, but I gotta hand it to him for referring us to Dr. ). Dr. has been a godsend to us for my son, who has Asperger's, as well as my daughter, who is moderate-to-severe autistic. I can't tell you what his out-of-pocket costs are...we are lucky enough to have family coverage, so I " just pay " a co-pay (she says with some sarcasm). Texas Child Neurology is on Coit Road just past 15th St in Plano. Hope this helps you somewhat.... Guest guest
Anne - I'm in Keller. I've seen Dr. Ryals at Cooks in FW and he is very nice, but not very helpful. He told me to just get a job and place my son at Behavioral Innovations.
