Guest guest
's having just as hard a time. Just wanted to let her know she's not alone...and believe me, school employees can be unbelievably merciless. Ten years later, still going through unnecessary advocacy BS. Probably retaliation...and they get away with it...still stings but love my child too much to let them get to me. As for AC on the bus.  I opted to use the bus for summer school once.  It had AC, technically, but it was still 90 degrees on the bus.  I didn't let Sammy on the bus even for one day.  I drove him & am glad to have not had to jump through hoops only to hit a wall.  I don't know why the school district would create such an enormous mountain out of a simple request.  Carol ________________________________ To: " " < > Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2011 12:59 PM Subject: Re: Re: Bus issues/  , Believe me, I can relate!!!!!!!!! This is long, but I hope worth the read. Empathy at least and some solutions, I hope! First of all, your child's doctor already wrote a letter to the school. Some school's just stall for game's sake. I know how it hurts when MEDICAL NEEDS are neglected. I ended up in an attorney's office re the same subject and he just showed me stacks of files of other parents with similar concerns. We had a case, but it wasn't likely he could to it...I couldn't even make it out of the building, I collapsed to the floor wailing. But I'm a tiger-mommy and I am relentless... I, too went through similar overheating concerns with my daughter Aubrey, now 13. When Aubrey was an infant her body's ability to regulate temperature was so underdeveloped it was awful! Living here in Hawai'i where the temperature is over 80 degrees most of the year, Aubrey would have " fevers " (sometimes as high as 105 OMG!!! degrees during the Summer months) on almost a daily basis. Thankfully, her babysitter stopped panicking, and after being advised to do so by our physician's note, would sponge-bathe her in a cooler bath to bring her temperature down. Fairly soon after that, thankfully, babysitter's husband put AC into the room they kept the children in and her temp issues improved. There are a few good people out there!!! This problem persisted beyond age 3. When Aubrey went to preschool, it got a lot trickier. As she started in June, I was terrified that they would not address this. (Second) Pediatrician wrote a thorough letter regarding Aubrey's ability to regulate temperature and it was given to the IEP team at the time of transition from 0-3 to Preschool. Advocated fiercely at the table, using notes I had taken as well, re the need for AC that was put into in her PLEP and on her service grid. We were happy to delay her entrance to preschool until AC was installed. Her teacher was great and I had no worries when she was there for the most part however, Aubrey had so many more health issues at that time that I had to kiss up to the health aide because after six months health aide was clearly annoyed and thus burnt out with Aubrey's needs. She sure made my life a living hell. Try discussing that with an IEP team delicately. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! HOWEVER, there was NO AC on the bus. Aubrey, at that time, went to our home school which is on a nearby air force base. By car, it would have taken 15 minutes to drive her (with AC in my car) there myself to her classroom but because it was on a base and base did not want parents coming on-base if not absolutely necessary in their view, Aubrey had to ride on the bus. The mornings weren't bad, but when being bused to her socialization program in a nearby preschool (room there had AC) after school it was too warm for her on the bus. She was covered in heat rash that first Summer and it made me crazy because I had all of the documentation necessary from the doctor that she needed to have AC on the bus because of periodic fevers and heat rash, but they didn't feel the 20 or so minute bus ride twice a day would have a great impact on her. Not only that, but Aubrey has tracheomalacia (a collapsing trachea) which was acute at the time, reflux I can go on and on how they all impacted her well-being... I would get calls a couple of times a week from her nearby preschool after school program, to come and get Aubrey because she was running a fever when she arrived after riding 15 minutes from school in the NON ACd bus-lethargic. I work at least an hour away even longer in traffic. Try supporting your child(ren) as a single parent when you can't work because your child is running fevers that are simply caused because DOE won't assign your child to an AC bus that DOES EXIST?!?! The problem got worse in September of the same year-2001...post 9/11 security was crazy tight on the air-force base and it would take almost an hour to get through the gate with security. Panicked, I realized that they also HAD TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE a bona-fide fever vs a heat-induced fever. Thus, I had to have her Developmental Disorders Pediatrician write an EVEN STRONGER LETTER. Armed with this letter and extensive documentation I kept for five plus months, I went to visit the SUPERINTENDENT in person with my evidence, went in person to the office of the PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE to get someone to come to the table and called an IEP meeting to discuss this subject. Fortunately the Superintendent did enough to resolve the problem, and got the PHN to do her job. That involved training of all personnel who worked with Aubrey to understand her ENTIRE EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN AND HEALTH PLAN including the bus staff. I was the squeakiest wheel when it came to her health issues, felt like ATTILA THE HUN but I love Aubrey infinitely more than I care about what schools think of me. (At the same time going through divorce and my dear husband was making me produce ridiculous amounts of documentation for our divorce proceedings.) I have no idea how I did it all! By the time she was about ready to leave that school, we FINALLY got AC on the bus!! Nonetheless, bandaid solution was that I DID HAVE HER PRESCHOOL TEACHER SEND OUR COOLER (stayed in health aide's frig) with Aubrey containing ICED WATER and a COOL PAK ON THE BUS for bus aide to use on the way to ASC program. Not quite two years later, Aubrey started biting in school because she was not enabled to communicate. Because of her moderate hearing impairment she needed to communicate with sign...We signed at home, school didn't and couldn't understand her needs. Long story, but she was transferred to a hearing impaired school now ONE HOUR away in traffic on a new bus that did not have AC. Fortunately though, her temp reg had improved somewhat at age 6 and she was in an after school program right there on campus and could be kept in her AC classroom there in the afternoons on super hot days... I cried a lot, too believe me. Whatever it takes to release the tension. AND whatever it takes FIND THE DOCTOR who is NOT going to make you feel guilty when you ask them to stand alongside you when you are advocating for what your child needs in their school!!! As scary as it was, we changed Dev Dis Ped THREE TIMES until we found the one who would truly stand beside us and has for the past six years!!!!!!!! You learn after a while, how to pace what you ask of them!!! Here's the greatest irony!!! The other day, Aubrey's middle school health aide who loves her AND READS Aub's MEDICAL PLAN, was not in school. Aubrey was running a temp of 99.8 degrees after PE. NEW AIDE (Aub has a NEW SPED teacher as well) sees Aubrey's lethargy and takes her to office. Principal panics. Doesn't read medical plan and calls me to pick her up. Of course I go. Yup, she's lethargic but after some cool water at home in AC (like she has in her classroom at school) after a half-hour or so, it's obvious SHE'S NOT RUNNING A REAL FEVER! Was just overheated from PE! (Last time I record in her communication log that she sad that older sibling staying home from school with a fever!!) So, since I lost almost $200 in income that same day, I have get the same doctor to write another note explaining what is going on and how to handle the " fevers " all over again...and to remind them to READ THE MEDICAL PLAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It just neva ends!!! I, too, cried a lot of, and still do, a few tears re this subject. Best advice I can give you-DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT and SQUEAK, BABY, SQUEAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MUA! (GO FORWARD!) Guest guest
Thank you so much, I can't tell you how good it feels to know that this can be solve that it most like be a long process but that it can be done. Now that you mention about the fevers as a baby I can recall that my son was the same way but no one ever said this could be due to the body's ability to regulate temperature. Thanks for sharing I would spend day's at the ER and weeks because Elias would get so many high fevers and they would run so many test and no doctor ever found anything. So I'm thinking this was it all along, I do think I will need a doctor that will be able to work with me. I feel like he's pediatrician is great but is getting frustrated for all I ask from him. Refill for meds., referrals, test, evals., and so much more but I need a pediatrician that can get it and not complain. Maybe it was just not his day that day I spoke with him but he made me feel so bad and in his tone like he does not want to see my child because of everything he has to do for him. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I > > > > > though > > > > > > > > > mostly > > > > > > > > > > > > > > everything > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
I think I'm going back to Kaiser because they were a bit better the down side is we get no PT and other stuff we get with our other insurance but I guess for now this would be our best for now. I wanted to keep him with this Dr. just because I wanted that LA Children's Hospital remove his tonsils and adenoids since Kaisers ENT was not too kind to my child and I felt that bad vibe from him but I guess I can try getting another one. I have a lot of calling to do now. I don't know how long this will take but I will not give up. Guest guest
Hi , So sorry for the delayed response. I have been away visiting my son. You have parental rights under IDEA. NO you do not have to allow the board medical doctor to examine your son. The board's medical doctor has no working knowledge of your son, his medical history and may not have any expertise with disabled students needs. NO you do not have to allow the board access to your son's medical records. If the district person insists that this is necessary please tell her to show you the written policy guidelines that outline that procedure. It does not exist. NO you do not have to give consent for the the board's medical doctor to discuss your son's medical info with his pediatrician. Our children's lives are already an open book and medical info is one area that can remain private. The district person is using scare tactics to get your consent. You should be oh so polite and ask questions but do not fall for this! I hope this helps. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 18 DS Subject: Re: Bus issues To: Date: Thursday, October 13, 2011, 11:04 PM Â So I though all of this was going too good. The school called me and told me that they were going to send a doctor to do a physical exam to my son at school. I was completely shock I did not know things like this happened so I said ok I will be there. She did the exam and said that she needs to talk with my son's pediatrician to make a final decision regarding this bus issue. So I can't get this on my son's IEP unless this doctor justifies it, and that she needs to make sure it is absolutely necessary because it will stay on his IEP until he gets out of the district/graduates. I'm lost once again because all of this is new and I'm not sure on what to say what I can say no to or what I can do different. Specially since things are going to fast I don't what to do. She basically made me sign the release of medical records because with out it she said she could not make a decision and that they did not understand why I was refusing to sign it when it's something she needs to in order to make a final decision. > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly everything was going to be ok well it was not like always. I don't know if I'm making it a big deal to think that a bus with no AC is a big deal. Last week our days were pretty hot over 100 when my son on the first day of school was dropped off he was in petty bad shape because of the heat. He could not walk his cloths were stuck to his skin because of how sweaty I was so scared he was going to pass out or something I grabbed a cool water bottle and gave it to him. Then started taking everything off he already had a heat rash all over his back and this was not during school time since the school said the children played indoors because of the heat. I'm so angry at the school that they will allow this, I called the school they told me they can't do anything because it's a contracted agency that handles the transportation so I called transportation and they said well it's the only bus that goes to that school so we can't move him to another bus, so I called support unit north that is in charged of my son's school and she said I can't do anything about busses you need to talk to transportation. Well thats how it all went, my son is home since his first day of school because I think putting him on that bus would be torture in the heat and not one is willing to do anything or just think it's not a big deal. It's a big deal with me because I'm not going to put my son in that situation and have something bad happen to him I'm just not but not sure what else to do. The school has not called me back with any answers since I told him my son will be staying home till this matter is resolve and I think the only answer will be for me to quit my job so I can drive him to school even though I would hate to do that. Someone told me I should type a letter and place a complain but I don't even know how to word it so that they know they need to do something. Or am I just being tooooooooooooo over protective of my only child? all input is welcomed > > >
Guest guest
I 1000% agree...Sometimes you just can't be nice...This is one of those times. > ** > > > Hi , > So sorry for the delayed response.
