HI CHARLYNE AND ALL! JUST WANTED TO SHOUT I AGREE I AGEE I AGREE STAY AWAY

FROM NEW YORK!! phew, that felt good...........Viola:

HI All,

I urge all the NY residents on this list to do everything that they can to

make themselves heard. NY is not a friendly SPED state regardless of what

district you live in. I wouldn't live in NY if I was offered a free mansions

with

livein help for life. After dealing with BOSES( they handle all NY SPED)

with Gail I can speak firsthand about the experience. A few attorneys have told

me that NY has more violations than any state and continually disregards

IDEA. They are arrogant and disrespectful as a whole toward people with

disabilities.

Oh my God what the heck is this. This is exactly what they do in Florida. I sent

this to my service coord who works in OD Heck thats where the state offices are

I wanna see what she says and I will make a trip in there and bring a copy of

this and raise you know what. How can this happen without us as parents knowing

about it. Mics school would never use these methods.I guess we have to band

together and fight for our kids. Thank you for posting this I will pass it on as

far as I can. Laurie

NY purchases beds in residential institutions in PA. After a person moves

to the RLI or RTF, NY then claims that they are residents of PA and refuses

to pay!! This makes the person stateless!!!!!Sara

Patty,

I found NY to be great with special education......if..........you don't

disagree with anything they say......if......you don't mind agreeing with things

at an IEP meeting and then getting the same old cookie cutter IEP 3 months

later....if......you don't ask them to use *individualized* teaching for your

child ......if ....you don't mind staff that have a harder time with change

than the kids do....if....you want to go through the IEP with a fine tooth comb

and have them take out instructions like * therapeutic crisis intervention

technique (which may include physical restraint) and time out planning

room.* if...if.....and more if's. Just try to go against something sometime.

Seth has had to have drs. orders for toilet training, a doctors written slip

allowing him to go to school with cradle cap, orange skin or eczema. Course,

this is all with BOCES.

Gail :-)

Sara, It doesn't seem like they could legally do that. Do you personally know

anyone that this has happened to? Or is it just something you have " heard " ?

WOW, Gail, that's a lot to take in. The only fights I've had so far was for

music therapy -- which I got -- for two and a half years and we are fading

it out now. Which is OK with me. But they didn't want to do it. I did want

to keep in Kindergarten for a second year and that didn't go my was.

Everyone talked me into moving him up to first grade. If he had stayed in K --

it

would only be a half day (with an hour extension for therapy). So I caved and

decided to send him. Their argument was that he moves up with his peers,

who love him, and so he will have more time in school as he approaches age 21

when they work on life skills. I have been told by parents of older kids to

" pick your battles " because issues WILL come up.

Well thanks for the heads up. I will have to become more aware of all these

things you are speaking of.

As a whole, though, I love the team that is working with him. However, he

is a summer program at the BOCES center and I am not impressed at all. I've

become the hovering mother. Luckily it's only for 6 weeks.

Thanks, patty (michael age 7, Syracuse NY)

I have not seen the papers. But friends who are involved with Woods, Inc

have told me so. I also have a family member who works to get NY residents

out of PA institutions who has related the same story - not connected to the

other source. People have been placed at Woods, in LAnghorne and then after

a period of time, NY has tried to claim that these people are no longer NY

residents.

Sara - Choose to make lemonade, not complain about the lemons.
