Guest guest
's bus does not have seat belts. Him standing up on the bus has been a problem for some time now. I wanted to take him off a few weeks ago but instead DH and I agreed to impose consequences for 's misbehavior (he does not get to watch TV, play Game Boy or computer if he doesn't stay seated on the bus.) My husband wants to use consequences to teach responsibility. I understand where DH is coming from, but I am also concerned that isn't " getting " the idea of consequences--and I really do not think he is getting it in this case. Guest guest
Tina: Tori's bus has no seat belts either, and they were made to supply a harness for her prior to transporting her. It is in her IEP for transportation. It is a safety issue when it comes to kids with special needs who have NO safety awareness and do not sit still. Guest guest
<<It is a safety issue when it comes to kids with special needs who have NO safety awareness and do not sit still.>> This is what I don't think my husband understands. He seems to think that if we can just find the right consequences, 's behavior will somehow " click " . Or at least that's my impression. I don't think he understands that knows no fear in certain situations. Him standing up and dancing on the bus is, I think, a self-stimulation thing. I don't think it's defiance. He craves the stimulation so badly that the loss of him Game Boy and computer privileges is the price he's willing to pay. We've got five weeks to go before the end of school, and I frankly don't have the energy to fight for an aide or put a harness on the bus. Right now I'm especially lethargic because I'm on antibiotics for an infection I got last week. The right side of my face swelled up for some reason, not sure what; I'm on two antibiotics and a pain reliever, and I got an IV antibiotic on Monday. I don't have it in me to fight a bus battle. Guest guest
Geez... I would make it a point to impress upon DH that, God Forbid there is an accident, will become a human torpedo (excuse the expression). A person's body weight triples upon impact. Guest guest
Well, I've already gone ahead and taken off the bus for the rest of the year. But his IEP is coming up very shortly and this WILL be an issue that will be discussed! Tina I love someone with autism . . . April is Autism Awareness Month. Guest guest
We have our IEP meeting in about two weeks. That's an issue on the agenda. Tina I love someone with autism . . . April is Autism Awareness Month.
Guest guest
<<Tina, Wait a minute he rides a Handicapped bus with no seatbelts is this true?>> Yes. There are no seat belts on the bus he's on, and it is a special ed bus. At this point, it's five weeks until the end of school and I figure it's easier to drive him rather than call an IEP meeting. We have our IEP meeting for next year coming up and I plan to address the issue of the bus there. Tina I love someone with autism . . . April is Autism Awareness Month.
