Jayne,

I don't know a whole lot about reading his levels, but

I know that the side effects with Synthroid are either

too stimulated, or very tired. I know that it takes

some time to adjust the levels dependent upon the

individual. He may lose his appetite somewhat until

the levels are adjusted. Does he have dark circles,

or swelling under his eyes? I think that may be

another indicator of hypo....

Good luck- not much of a $.02, but hope it helped.

Jayne there is a lot in your letter and I will try and comment about

some of the things. Yes, his WBC is low and what this means over the

years is up to the doc to evaluate which it looks like the doc has been

watching this.

For the thyroid it looks within the normal ranges all the years.

Somewhere in recent years I read about some new ranges for the TSH.

wasn't diagnosed with hypothyroid until he was 23 after I changed

him from a wonderful pediatrician to a doctor in internal medicine.

This was 20 years ago and they weren't testing our kids for this as much

then. When I look back at old pictures I can see the swelling of his

face, we thought he was gaining weight. He had dry skin, and coarse

hair, a lot of other things relating to teeth, hips had gone on for him.

Once he started on the Synthroid he lost 13 pounds, his skin was better

and his hair was soft. Every time the doctor tried to increase the

Synthroid to therapeutic level though he was quicker to anger and became

self abusive. It wasn't until later years when he was put on Tegretol

for mood swings that the doc was able to get the Synthroid to

therapeutic level.

It is good the doc's watch this better in our kids as I have articles of

a couple studies where it is believed that untreated hypothyroidism can

cause autism. I am suspicious this is what caused 's autism. When

Skotko was in the news I was in contact with him and he said that

sometime this year the American Journal of Medical Genetics was to be

coming out with a review article on hypothyroidism and Down Syndrome.

Since I don't get that publication I hope to hear from some of my

sources when it does come out. Or, anyone on the list if you come

across it let me know.

Louise Mom to 43 DS, Deaf, ASD (diagnosed at age 41)

Hypothyroidism - Dr. Len? and anyone else too

please!

I'm hoping someone can shed a little light on this subject for me. I've

read Dr. Len's website info on Hypothyroidism but still have a few

questions.

Bear with me as this could get lengthy...

will be 7 next month. We recently did some labs to check

several things due to my growing concern with his low stamina that has

escalated since Christmas.

We have a few issues going on...

12/2004 's White Blood Cell count was low: 2.6 (4.5-13.5)

01/2005 his CBC was repeated and his WBC was low: 3.6 (4.5-13.5)

Looking back at past labs I have:

4/2000 his WBC was 3.6 low (4.60-10.20)

His Neuro Ped just kind of came to the conclusion that he must just

run a low WBC.

Is this true? Or is this an underlying thing? Of course you worry

about the dreaded Leukemia. Apparently his RBC's are fine.

So fast forward to this year,

03/2006: WBC was low: 2.8 (4.5-13.5)

Zinc is normal: 91 (70-150) mcg/dL

Vitamin B12 is normal: 605 (211-911) pg/ml

Folate: I don't know what this result means:

15.2 (5.4) ng/ml (I'm thinking he's quite defecient based on the

following)

It does say:

Normal: >5.4ng/mL

Deficient: <3.4ng/mL

Intermediate: 3.4 to 5.4 ng/mL

Now here's his Thyroid testing history:

4/2000 his TSH was 3.910 uIU/mL (.5 - 4.7)

4/2000 his Free T4 was 1.27 ng/dL (.71 - 1.85 ng/dl)

5/2001 his TSH was 4.390 high (.26 - 4.3) uIU/mL (no one ever told

me it was high)

11/2001 his TSH was 5.50 (.55 - 7.10) UIU/ML (different scale of

measurment but quite a bit higher from just 6 months ago)

11/2001 his T4 was 9.4 ( 5.1 - 13.5 ) MCG/DL

IGA was checked 97 (18-171) MG/DL

12/2004 his TSH was 2.56 (.4 - 5.2) uIU/ML

his T4 was .91 (.71- 1.85) NG/DL

3/2006 his TSH was 4.503 (.35 - 4.94) mcIU/mL

his T4 was 1.02 (.70 - 1.48) ng/dL

his IGA was 160 (27-195) mg/d:

So I look at his TSH and it's been up and down but mostly up. When

you look at the new guidelines it's high all but one time (.3 - 3.04)

His Neuro Ped said she had looked at Dr. Len's info and wants to do an

antithyroid antibody blood test. She thinks he's probably on his way to

Hypothyroidism and would recommend starting him on Synthroid. She's

going to put in a referral to an Endocrinologist just to make sure

though, let me get all my answers.

I look at the new guidelines and think he must be Hypo.

He has low stamina, mottled skin, swollen tongue, increase in

constipation, occasionally has cold extremities.

Am I blind or is this so obvious? Of course looking on the web I see

that it can be hazardous to his brain -how so? well if he's been hypo

all along, what have I done to him? What would I expect to see

different and how soon after if he starts Synthroid? Are there side

effects?

Just curious of anyone's $.02

Thank you for any info you can share.

Jayne

Jayne,

If you feel that something is not right with keep asking. Get

a second, even third opinion. A referral to the endocrinologist is a

good start.

If you are worried about the low WBC keep asking. Personally I don't

think " he must just run a low WBC " is a satifactory answer.

Make sure the doctors LISTEN to the symptoms is displaying.

Some docs look at the lab results only. My cousin, who is a lab

technician, has pointed out to me that a lot of lab work has to be

interpreted by the doctor taking symptoms and other factors into

account.

Lastly, always go with your intuition. You know your child better

than anyone.

hypothryroid is pretty common among those with ds, its part of the yearly ds

checkup. we are going to be checking nathan's soon too as he keeps sleeping

all the time even at school, and has been very moody and hungrier. he has

had some elevated levels in the past but just off and on. we are currently

trying to figure out how to draw the blood, it takes and army, im fine

withthe versed route, but the doc was thinking maybe anesthesia, anyways if

they start synthriod you need to watch for symptoms of hyperthyroidism, just

think of everything going too fast, loses weight, elevated temp maybe,

overly active, heart rate etc. sorry if someone allready posted on this i

may be late as was gone all weekend. shawna
