Thanks to you all for giving me HOPE again!!!

There is always hope!!!!! Let me explain though, while yes she talking

like a little chatterbox we still can't understand over 1/2 of what she is

trying to say but even that is a huge improvement on before. Having her learn

sign sure helps with the not understanding all her words. But the fact that

she is communicating even if it is still mostly in her language we all now see

that we were right that she does have the capabilities we just had to find

the right combination for her. We are hoping by increasing her speech and OT

that this will help it improve even more. You know that old saying: You

can't teach a dog new tricks? Well they were wrong!!!!! Not that Trisha is an

old dog in any way shape or means but you get the idea. As long as there is

breath in your body it will never be too late and I sure wish people would

quit making parents feel that if their child hasn't done something (talk, walk)

by a certain age then it's too late. Of course everyone wants their child to

be doing these things at an earlier age but geez sometimes it doesn't happen

and you just have to keep trying different things and combo's and wait for

that door to crack just a bit. Trisha may not ever be totally understandable

and then again she might fool us all and become a professional speaker. All

I know is that we had to keep trying that I could see and don't ask me how,

but I could see that she had more in her than anyone thought and that we just

had to keep at it no matter how long it took. We have a very long way to go

yet, and we still havent' had a real mom and daughter talk yet, but hey for

them to call her Ms. Chatterbox was better to me than had they given her the

Title of Miss America. :-)

You know I really don't know but will ask that, I know that they just

started taking upper grade kids this year so I know they go through 12 grade.

It

wasn't until this year that took any kids over the elementary age and

preferably even younger but they decided to open their doors to the older

students

and they said they are so glad they did and how amazed they were at how well

the older children are adapting.

Tell how proud I am of his accomplishments at the doc's and I'm so

glad you didn't fall and yes please do rest we don't want you to have a

set-back.

Wow, it sure feel good to share good news and not only from my view point

but knowing that others are seeing the change is so wonderful and I'm sure you

guys were getting tired of my griping about the school for so long. lol

Wow! Carol,

What impressive news! You should consider visiting the old school

that she had attended, once Trisha really gets into chattering more

so that she could shock everyone out there on how much progress she

has accomplished. Just kidding, you do not want her near it.

Can you imagine other kids still falling behind because of the school

being set still in their old ways and I'm so glad that you kept

voicing your concerns and letting them know what you believed in.

Question: Up to what age does the school that Trisha attends go up

to? Reason I ask is due to the fact that most schools out here for

the kids with autism or developmental delay go up to a certain age,

there is a cut off? Hope not for Trisha, just asking.

I'll be checking out The Autism Research Ctr. as I ran into meeting

the director this past Saturday at the Conference that I actually

attended this past Saturday now that my doc had given me the a-ok to

drive and coming along well and now I will take advantage of a tour

out there as they provide lots of services and one of them was

educational settings. He would like to meet as he has the dual

dx of DS & AU and he would like to hear more. Especially after

hearing one of our local medical physician who had mentioned it at

her presentation that AU could co-exist with another disability. Did

I make time to thank her for it? Boy, did I!

This morning at the doc's the nurse needed to draw some blood from

and they had asked me how would I like to go about it? I told

them to try it out with him sitting down and his arm resting on the

table and he cooperated nicely and allowed them without any

struggles. I was so proud of him even when they placed the cotton

swab over it with some tape he did not have a fit. I was even able to

give them a urine sample but they had to followed my method and that

was no cup, no baggie for his thingie but one of those medical hat

placed on the toilet and I would have to distract him from seeing it

with his back to sit down and all the medical staff were surprised of

this accomplishment and kept praising him for such a job well done.

He did well because I had promised him tacos and sure enough he

earned it.

Just to know I was pretty upset for him peeing all over the ceramic

floor yesterday evening and I caught myself from falling and I had to

cautiously clean it up as I'm only allowed to do light activities and

no lifting like carrying a pail of water but managed to clean him up

and the dining room floor, such moments and what work in a slow mode.

This morning paid off. Still working on these moments though. Hmm,

maybe I could do a social story on it. I did request for an ARD

meeting so that I could request for more services for him.

I better get some rest, too exhausted now and later on will make the

steps adding some exercise activities, like walking, just need to

rebuild my strength. Too much to do.

Lots of hugs and give Trisha a great big hug! So proud of her.
