Also, I was told that age, itself, was not necessarily a disqualifier. Blood type and body size are important in tx. I have been told by someone who had Hep C and was transplanted that, all things being equal, if he needed a transplant and a PSC or PBC patient would be able to use the same liver, that the liver would go to the other person. The reason is that as soon as the new liver is hooked up to the blood flow it is also infected with Hep C. Did you all see the recent news about Evel Kneival being taken back to the hospital? They said he's OK, but that he has hepatitis. So, it DOES happen...... Guest guest
Penny, Glad to hear about your fever being gone. So are you saying that people having the best chance of servival have the best chance of getting the liver? That's surely another incentive for living a healthy lifestyle. Guest guest
Dear Peg, I will be praying that you get well immediately. I would hope that the Cipro will help Phil from getting it, although certain strains don't respond to antibiotics at all. RE: the tx questions...I've been told that my small size will be a problem. It's got to match perfectly. Also of course the blood type and condition of the liver when it comes in. It's highly complicated. More than I probably need to know right now. We're still waiting by the phone. I feel like I'm getting a URI tonight....I'm praying I'm not!! I'm running a fever for two days now and we'll just have to wait and see. I think theres another bile duct obstruction. Hope there's not another hospitalization around the corner. I'll be praying for you guys and for quick complete healing!! Much love, Jacquelyn ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
I have been subsribed to this group for several weeks and find it very helpful. I have seen a lot of comments about who gets transplanted and how decisions are made when an organ becomes available. A few of the comments don't sound quite right to me, based on what I have been able to find out. Anyway, if you want to read the " official " UNOS rules on organ allocation for livers, you can go to WWW.UNOS.ORG and then do a search for policy 3.6. This describes the rules that the Organ Procurement Organizations have to follow. Age is not a factor as long as someone is medically suited to be listed in the first place. (There are special rules for pediatric patients). There are a lot of hurdles, medical and otherwise, to overcome in order to be listed. Size and blood type are definite factors since if they don't match, the transplant may not work. Waiting time is a consideration, as is the degree of medical urgency which is defined by this policy. Also, on another subject, hepatitis patients can and often do have a recurring illness after transplant, but usually after several years. It is not clearly understood whether PSC can recur after transplant, but apparently a small number of patients have this happen. Thanks, Roy T. Guest guest
Penny-- What did Eviel Knievel (sp?) have? Didn't hear about this. Laurie ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Jacquelyn-- I'm praying, too, that you're not getting an URI. Maybe you should call your dr - he'll want you in the best of health until that call comes. Guest guest
Dear Laurie, I think I'll take your advice and call my doctor today. I'm afraid though that the fever is not a URI but another obstruction. We shall see....It's all in HIS timing!!! Maybe today will be the day!! I'm praying for you! Love, Jacquelyn ------------------------------------------------------------------------
