are there any ? I was diagnosed 7 months ago with pca. I am 43 with

gleason 8 and 25.3 psa. I have had no treament yet. as i read the

posts about the outcomes or chronicles of differnt people I find

nothing that encourages me to have hormone (zoladex) or IMRT

radiation. If i missed a success story would someone please share it

with me ! I have read and read and frankly i hate reading but in this

case i must but I have no symptoms nor do I have problems urinating or

any pain. shoud I ? what I have been told is that I have 20% chance of

cure with a high reacurrane rate and I will probably be on chemo at

some point down the road. As I read the stories within this group

almost everyones psa rises after treamtment and they go back on

hormones or whatever. The emotional effect is overwhelming because I

dont know what to do. shoot me with poison ? radiate me and watch me

turn purple and say " I am sorry the treatment did not help sir " or

live with the doctors clinical experience that state I willnot reach

50 and die a painful death. It sounds like a roll of the dice.....I

can roll my own dice !

You will know from what

you have read that your numbers are not good and that you will have to have sme

conventional treatment if you are to manage this disease.

Can I suggest that you go

to the second section of the YANA - You Are

Not Alone Now www.yananow.net site where men to tell their stories and

how they arrived at their decisions regarding treatment. Many people have

mailed me to say how useful they have found this, especially because most of

the men are happy to respond to specific questions. The section of the site can

be found by clicking the link labelled Experiences or going to http://www.yananow.net/Experiences.html If you go there you will see that all the stories

(there are over 200) are also indexed by PSA, Age, Gleason Score and Year of

diagnosis so you can get a match to your numbers.

All the best,

Terry Herbert in Melbourne, Australia

Diagnosed ‘96: Age

54: Stage T2b: PSA 7.2: Gleason 3+3=6: No treatment. August '06 PSA 27.4

My site is at www.yananow.net

As a

physician, I am painfully aware that most of the decisions we make with regard

to prostate cancer are made with inadequate data: Dr

“Snuffy” Myers.

I guess that it depends on what you mean by sucess. I am sure that many

would define that as waking up each morning and seeing a new day.

I just recieved this note from a friend and maybe this is how you would

define a total sucess.

" When I was diagnosed in 1990, the urologist predicted I had no more

than 36 months to live. I'm now in the 17th year of remission, and a

month ago my doctor told me he believes I am cancer free. Along with

this background, my study of PCa, active volunteer work in the cause,

and advocacy are now in about their 15th year. And I'll keep it up as

long as God gives me the strength to do so. "

Yes there are sucesses. They most often leave the lists because they do

not have problems and do not need the support that these lists give.

OK. You asked for a sucess story. I shared one of a man who was treated

and is alive and 17 years after treatment is considered cancer free by

his doctor. Is this not considered a sucess story? I am willing to bet

that with your stats if you do nothing you will not have a similar

sucess story.

,

I am confused by your answer.

First I do not know many men named Kathy so you know I do not have a

prostate but that does not mean I do not have a brain and that I cannot

talk to men with prostate cancer and learn from them. Are you being

sarcastic and attempting to put me down?

It is impossible to find an answer to your question. To find someone

exactly your age, who have the same genes and grew up in exactly the

same enviornment with the exact same cancer will never happen. A while

back there were twins dealing with PCa on one of the lists and their

cancers acted differently. They reacted differently to treatment.

Also treatments have improved so people who were treated 15 or 20 years

ago would have had a different treatment. There are constant

improvements.

There are no guarantees. As you have been told repeatedly you need

treatment. Postponing treatment will only make it more difficult to

control. You need to learn as much as you can and move forward or else

you are only finding a passive way to commit suicide unless you are

highly unusual.

If you are having a very difficult time making a decision them possibly

a psychotherist may help. That is one things they help people do.

Hope that you find peace of some sort.
