Morning Jeanie,Has anyone pursued a class action lawsuit against the Miralax/Glycolax companies that you know of?

What happens with the epsom salt baths? My dd gets lethargic if she takes one and it was LeeAnn that pointed out that it has sulfer in it. Low and behold her tests from Pfeiffer came back high in sulfer which would be why she reacted to epsom salts that way. I never knew there was sulfer in epsom salts but it wasn't the magnesium.

I also wanted to thank you for all the advice. As you can tell I have tried zinc with my son and stopped because I wasn't too sure about it and with my sons constipation I worried it may worsen it. I would like to try magnesium but my son is sensitive to so many magnesium based supplements and even epsom salts that I worry about using that too. Thanks again for all the advice.

well i was just at the pediatrician with my son this morning and i asked her about this and she said that it is ok for children to be on miralax for many years and that there is nothing wrong with it...and when i told her i had heard bad things about it she acted like she didn't know what i was talking about and just simply said "oh really?" i am taking my son to a second GI doctor for a second opinion next month. i don't understand the such varying opinions about this...

There are people on it for 10 years and lost all their bowels. Many children have died, In my opinion, it doesn't cure a thing. The company states, no more than two weeks!

At this point, it's the doctors who are at fault for recommending for these long periods of time. manufaturer states no more than two weeks. Years ago, yes, they knew they were filling prescriptions for children when they said themselves, not to give to children. What really gets me is they claim on their website and on TV, no bloating, no excessive gas, no nausea, but if you look up PEG 3350, all the sites say this is a common side effect from PEG 3350..................How do they get away with this?????

Isn't this like coming up with a cigarette that claims it doesn't cause any health problems called Mira-cigarette?

My DD's pediatrician told me the same thing. A little red flag went up for me when she told me she had her patients on it for years! She made it sound like it was the children who were resistant to being toilet trained. She said, and I quote, "There is this little boy who soils himself, but he doesn't care, he just soils himself. He's been on Miralax for years, maybe 5 years... he is 7 now". I was thinking at the time - how awful! Well, my DD is not going to be on it for that long! The pediatrician had initially told me just 3 months, to help her colon which is stretched (she never took x-rays to verify this, by the way) to get back into normal size and begin normal motility again. She completely ignored the fact that I thought it was the whole milk that was causing the

constipation. Oh, when I think back on it now, I am so SO livid!!I truly trusted this pediatrician because previously, she had recommended natural, non-medicated remedies for other things such as eczema and diaper rash. I finally took my DD off when we realized that she hadn't grown an inch nor gained an ounce (in fact, she had lost an ounce!) in 8.5 months from the age of 1.5 to 2.2 years!!) I think that this fact also took the pediatrician a little aback. And I owe it all to this group, by the way. Because of what I learned here, I was able to connect the dots and get my child off this drug before it continued to harm her and potentially damage her for life.I'm thinking that there's someone related to the Miralax manufacturer/distributor who is pushing the literature on these pediatricians and telling them that

it's okay to prescribe to children and also for long-term. It is COMPLETELY MIND BOGGLING to me that all of these pediatricians, across the U.S and in Europe and elsewhere, routinely and comfortably with confidence prescribe this stuff to children, for long-term use despite what the label clearly states - AND they don't even monitor them!!There is a weird disconnect here and my gut feeling is that the manufacturer/distributor is at the bottom of it. I was on miralax for 10 years (I'm 31).  Every doctor I saw, not just my GI, and including my OBGYN when I was pregnant, told me there was ZERO harm in taking PEG long term. " All it does is draw water into the colon. Take it as often as you want "  I was told that over and over and over again. I didn't have any side effects like your children are having, but my colon has come to a complete halt, and my current GI has put having part of my colon removed on the radar.  I don't take miralax anymore, and am using magnesium, vitamin C, probiotics, and the specific carbohydrate diet to help get things back in check.  It's just infuriating.  I wish these doctors were more willing to help us work WITH our bodies via diet, probiotics or supplements to get things going vs pushing pharmaceuticals.  They want to treat symptoms vs the whole person, and we're paying the price. It's disappointing.

CAUTION...use magnesium cautiously if you are constipated. My son was recently compacted and I gave him Calms magnesium. His levels went through the roof and his body shut down placing him into septic shalk & cardiac arrest. They removed his entire colon and were able to save his life. This just happened this last February 14th 2011.

Isn't this like coming up with a cigarette that claims it doesn't cause any health problems called Mira-cigarette?

What happens with the epsom salt baths? My dd gets lethargic if she takes one and it was LeeAnn that pointed out that it has sulfer in it. Low and behold her tests from Pfeiffer came back high in sulfer which would be why she reacted to epsom salts that way. I never knew there was sulfer in epsom salts but it wasn't the magnesium.

I also wanted to thank you for all the advice. As you can tell I have tried zinc with my son and stopped because I wasn't too sure about it and with my sons constipation I worried it may worsen it. I would like to try magnesium but my son is sensitive to so many magnesium based supplements and even epsom salts that I worry about using that too. Thanks again for all the advice.

It seems that anything taken when constipated can cause an issue since the body

isn't ridding itself of things as it should. I wonder if this is part of the

problem with my sons sensitivities? Since it seems ok at first and then it is

like it builds up and the reactions occur.

well i was just at the pediatrician with my son this morning and i asked her about this and she said that it is ok for children to be on miralax for many years and that there is nothing wrong with it...and when i told her i had heard bad things about it she acted like she didn't know what i was talking about and just simply said "oh really?" i am taking my son to a second GI doctor for a second opinion next month. i don't understand the such varying opinions about this...

There are people on it for 10 years and lost all their bowels. Many children have died, In my opinion, it doesn't cure a thing. The company states, no more than two weeks!

my son has been on miralax for 2 years and i am just finding out that it could be really bad for him. he has been to doctors and i have him scheduled for a second opinion because nothing is helping him and this has been going on since birth and he is now 4...i feel so lost as to what is going on with this medicine and what i should do. i already know he's dependent on it. i mean, come on, he has been on it for 2 years! i can't even go a few days without giving it to him and he has major problems after that...

At this point, it's the doctors who are at fault for recommending for these long periods of time. manufaturer states no more than two weeks. Years ago, yes, they knew they were filling prescriptions for children when they said themselves, not to give to children. What really gets me is they claim on their website and on TV, no bloating, no excessive gas, no nausea, but if you look up PEG 3350, all the sites say this is a common side effect from PEG 3350..................How do they get away with this?????
