Sir,

Your suggestion is good in the long

run, but many companies may not go for alternative if huge cost is involved.

One of our unit requires 1 crore to change the existing AC roof.

Safety net is a good option but tying

the safety net is a skilled job which consumes time and poses similar height

work hazads like AC roof work. (kindly note that I have highlighted this

as one of the options in my earlier mail)

Dear Rabiqali,

The best action is discourage any new building with AC sheet roof . RCC

is

the best & Coated metal sheet is an option. .Appraise management with

case

studies of fatal accidents & consequences. Plan & progressively

replace all

AC sheet roofing with coated Metal sheets.(Insulated also available

for

reducing noise & heat)

Using safety net is effective in preventing fatal accidents on existing

roofs in addition to the other safeguards.

I trust that this is the right direction.

Work on AC roof

Dear All,

As you know work on AC roof is highly risky due to aging of AC roof and

becomes brittle. The following conventional safe systems are presently

employed.

1. Work permit on AC roof

2. Roof crawl ladder

3. Providing Safety net beneath the work place.

4. Engaging trained work men

But you will agree that implementing these sytems consumes more time than

the actual work and often it is very difficult to convince the contractor/

engineer to follow these systems.

I would like to know any of our safety professional have found a solution/

system to overcome this problem. I prefer user friendly, economic and easy

to use systems than the conventional systems.

I will share some of the site made simple devices (Not related with this

query) which I have implemented and proved to be very useful and effcetive

which I will share in subsequent mails.

S. Rabiq Ali

It is very easily to get the anchor, We are putting AC sheet on the MS channel....this MS support we can use as a anchoring OR if you didn't get then you can put two side MS coloum / derrik & tie-up wire rope inbeteen place and use of retriogard protection system.

If any further doubt, please let me know !!

Sir,

Thanks for the prompt response. Request

you to clarify the following.

1. This retriogard

protection system (presume Retractable fall arrester) how a person will

hook to the main life line. This will be fixed permananetly or will be

hooked as and when required, since I perceive fall of person while hooking

to main line.

2. If persons work on opposite

diaganal ends (as shown in the picture) , while moving overlapping will

occur. how this issue is addressed?

Clarification/ Addition:

Safety belt to be anchored continuously to the line (Am I correct Devanshu ?)

1. Another rope can be tied with the ms pipe/top angle for anchoring belt after reaching to roof at specific opening (as shown in red line)

2. Double life line safety belt should be used (to avoid falling during hooking up or change position to avoid overlapping)

3. A simple MS ladder can be tied to the roof structure parellel to the purlin to which safety belt can be anchored (in case of job of short duration, less worker and for specific point repairing on roof where movement is less) as an user-friendly method.

Dear All,

A Very fruitful discussion is initiated by Mr Rabiqali.

Working at heights is of two categories - One is during project stage

Second is during maintenance & renovating stage

During project stage it would be well addressed by the respective renowned construction companies who are well equipped.

In my experience, L & T had set up a Staircase at both ends which would be assembled at site. For major erections the required cranes were brought. Hence

the project went on without such problems.

When I moved to another plant, which was laid over by AC sheets, the problem started.

Here the contractors are not thoroughly educated about the good construction practices and many contractors worked in one roof. ( The L1 for that particular

section would be approved and the lay out will be enjoyed by each manager as per his whims and fancies)

Each time accessibility, anchoring were addressed in a different way and each time it was a puzzle. Each time it was a challenge to provide solution within the avaialble resources.

Unfortunately I was not able to document that experience.

Now a good discussion has started; I propose this forum could develop a Documented procedure with neat sketches and photographs which could be a standard

guideline while working over roofs.

1. While going for new constructions the provisions to reach the critical points to be considered

2. While working in the existing old plants, the methods to be developed

3. References to be provided for updating on this subject.
