Maureen,

I have a question. Since Jim is listed and on beeper - do you have to tell (or ask) tx team your going out of the country? I guess I'm surprised they would let you go. I always picture them like the KGB or CIA!

Also, I don't know when O'Brien is going to be home from his travels - but he could be a great resource for you. Plus how often would he be able to meet an American with PSC, or Jim an Irishman with PSC? Something that makes you go hmmmm!

Maureen,

What a coincidence, and I have been married 26 years today as well.

July the 12th 1975. We meet in Hawaii in 1972 when her father was stationed in the Air Force and I was in the Navy at Pearl Harbor. She had been there for 4 years and I had been there for almost three years. We meet in May and I got out of the Navy in Aug. They got reassigned to Ft. Meade, Md. in July so I followed her out here instead of going back to Pleasanton, Calif. And the rest is history.

I hope you and Jim have a wonderful anniversary. and I are going to the ocean for three days. Fun, fun, fun!!!!!! Take care.

Larry, Baltimore, almost 52, UC 95 PSC 96, married to the same woman for 26 years today. I am hoping for another 26 years. God bless.

-Maureen,

The procedure you're talking about I think is blood salvaging.

Suctioning out the blood in the body cavity and directing it back

into the body thru machine. We would be willing do to this. What we

could not agree to is using stored blood for India, hers or anyone

elses. This is one of the reasons the Dr's really are directing us to

Living Donor transplants, they can transplant India while her blood

supply is still good. They can determine when the best time is for

this and not when a liver becomes available and she's in very poor

health. More and more people are requesting this type of surgery, in

the past it was usually for religious reasons, now people are

concerned with the often associated complications with blood

transfusions. In fact there are a number of bloodless units around

the country. But we have found none who specializes in transplants

yet. The organ transplant itself (the liver) we feel comfortable

giving to her. We have talked personally to both Dr.'s And although

the surgeons would have to take special care with this kind of

surgery it can and has been done successfully. We would hope they

would take care with ALL the surgeries they perform. But we have

found that with the so readily available blood supply that they can

pump into a person the surgeons sometimes tend to lean on this backup

instead of taking there time with the surgery itself. Point in case,

Marks father just had his bladder and prostrate out due to cancer. He

found a Dr. in NY who would be willing to do it with out blood.

Usually this is a very bloody surgery. Marks father lost 2 cups of

blood during the procedure. The Dr. was a very skilled surgeon. So

we are very positive about the transplant when the time comes. We

know we are putting our precious little daughters life into the hands

of the surgeon and then asking him to take more than the normal care

of her. But both of the Dr.'s we've talked to have a record of

successful transplants and when any of us or our loved ones goes

under the knive so to speak we all are putting our lives in their

hands. Hope this didn't confuse you more. I'll be happy to answer any

questions.

Mark isn't home right now. He has to finish up a couple jobs before

we fly out on Mon. But we might take you up on the offer to have

someone watch India. I'll have to ask Mark and let you know one way

or enother tonight. He is very protective of India. We don't leave

her often. But I'll check. The offer was much appreciated.

Take Care

Maureen,

Sounds absolutely beautiful. Someday we'll get there. I'm having an

AWFUL time researching my family though. I know they came from Cork

during the famine in the 1840s and they settled in land. My

grandfather somehow ended up in MA where he met my grandmother. I

would love to visit there someday when I figure out who their parents

were and exactly where they lived. It would be wonderful to visit

the place where they once stood.

Thanks for the visuals!

Hi...how are you both doing today....

On the college front I am going to get notes from his doctors and make copies and give them to each prof...nurse...disabilities dept...etc...cover every base I can...and then hope for the best....

Ty has talked to some of his professors..and they seemed to be understanding...but then again they are looking at someone at this time looks good...so not sure how seriously they are taking this whole thing....

As far as pooring over the insurance...well I literally was sitting with every type of medical...insurance...you name it...to learn as much as I could....all afternnon...In the am I went to the cardiologist with my mom....She needed clearance from them to do her vascular surgery...Well now she needs to go get a stress test....Just heard from them that will be )ct 30th...the day after we spend the day in Philly in HUP for Tys evaluation meeting....Of course I don't want to put Moms testing off...so looks like the beginning of a wild week...Also just learned from my son that he will be going back to Japan the first week of Nov....this time just for a week....but I wish he wasn't flying so much and especially out of the country.....but he is 23 and he has to make his own decisions...I am glad to see that he is not afraid....On the other hand...My daughter in Chicago...never liked flying in the first place....and usually would rather drive home....says its because she is bringing the dog...but I know it is because she really hates to fly...especially alone....If Vic..her boyfriend is with her she does better....They just got back from Vegas in the beginning of Sept....

Anyways...got off track there....going over so many different types of insurance for so many different things......so many phone calls.....for my mom and Ty.....and trying to be so organized...by the end of the night...I was not sure what my name was...

I think I am still ........

It is funny you mentioned the drs moving " away " when discussing sensitive

topics. When the surgeon began telling us about the potential cancer and

" outlook " , he tried to avoid eye contact with me and instead looked at my

wife. I guess he thought I couldn't handle the news and was about to break

down. As soon as my wife started to tear up, he diverted his eyes back to

me. Strange how people will act. Shows they are only human. It must be

tough to tell people regularly of devastating news and not become

desensitized to it.
