Insomnia and bradycardia

Hi,

new Pt (female, around 50) with insomnia coming on Tuesday - problem is she has

bouts of bradycardia (recent onset, months), been hospitalised once because of

it. GP won't give her sleeping tabs for fear of lowering HR even further - so

now I'm a bit terrified as to what to do with her...

I guess that any herb that is sedative, has to act in some way or another via

the ANS, which then may affect HR...?! Or??

Pt thinks bradycardia may be linked to periods, and has been on mini-pill for

last 5, 6 weeks I think (no change so far). Definitely she's had a very

stressful yr. This information is just from chatting socially, will know more on

tuesday, but would appreciate any thoughts or ideas before that!

Many thanks

Hi,

am resending my query below - with some additions:

Her HR is usually 72 bpm before rising and 80-90 with minor activity

(moving, talking). She has been having bouts of ectopic beats and lowered HR

the last day or 2 - when I took her pulse it was 56 bpm with 6-7 beats

missed per 30sec. Bradycardia is usually triggered by ectopic beats (she

called it an 'ectopic bigeminal beat' - i can't find this as a combination

anywhere? Couldn't feel any premature beats either.) and has gone as low as

32, usually though 45-46 bpm. Associated with chest tightness. ECG, Echo,

Holter supposedly all NAD. Thyroid fct normal.

Stress and anxiety are huge factors, and she tends to be looking after

everybody bar herself, can't set boundaries, is constantly worrying,

over-alert, uses high activity/adrenaline levels to drown out potential

feelings of dread, depression and low confidence. Menopausal - heavier

periods, no flushes, wakeful sleep.

It looks as if the bradycardia is secondary to high sympathetic tone, i.e.

I'd love to use Valerian, Lavandula etc, but am concerned at possibly

lowering HR further. Am considering giving her drop doses of Verbena or

Scutellaria, but would love some feed back, thoughts on this case first. Can

give more info, if needed.

Many thanks in advance!
