Sher have you had PFT tests? Done the 6 mim. walk test? That will tell your saturation level. They also sometimes do Arterial blood gas. ( if they are going to do that you need to be sure you make them numb your wrist first, some don't ) So call and get yourself in. It's not good to be without oxygen or low. God Bless...Peggy

Hey all...is it typical to be short of breath in the " mild " stage as I am? And, when does one go on 02? I'm sure there are lots of " it depends " but I am breathless so much of the time and would appreciate some input from those of you who have been there, done that. Thanks and hugs. Sher ipf 5-06

Peggy, what is a PFT test? Yes, I did the walk and the PT said my sat levels dropped but didn't say to what...No I have not had arterial blood gas but I will remember to request to numb the wrist. Gosh! Sounds ghastly! Thanks for responding...Sher ipf 5-06

Pulmonary Function Test, you blow into this big tube and it gives them measurements on the functioning of your lungs. Next time they do your saturation remember your number, they are important.

the AG is nothing as long as they numb the site. When are you going back to see your Pulm. Dr. ??

Sher - I don't know if Peggy sent you an answer yet or not...a PFT is a pulmonary function test....you breathe into a hose that is attached to a computer and the tester tells what to do....breathe in deep...blow out....then they give a bronchodilator that is in nebulized form...then they repeat the test to see if there is any difference. If you are not on oxygen and this is your first PFT they also do a blood test. That's how they can find out how much lung space you have that is working. Some centers do this test while you sit in a clear box...like a telephone booth....others don't. Hope that helps.

Sher,

I was put on oxygen when in mild stages but my oxygen sat was 85. After I went to rehab my sats improved and I went off O2 for about a year and a half. Now, I have been on full time for years.

Have they done a walking oximeter test? Sometimes a doc will take your oxygen sat while you are sitting. That makes no sense.

I remember that while I was off oxygen, I had periods of shortness of breath. It was just miserable.

Sher,

Remember to get copies of your Pulmonary Function Test. Then you can sit at your computer and find out exactly what it all means. It is so important to keep records and to be informed. P posted the website that explains PFT testing and I know that he would post it again once you get the results.

Joyce, yes I've had the tests some of you ask about. I know my blood sat. level dropped but being so newly diagnosed it didn't occur to me to ask...I wouldn't know the difference. Perhaps I would now that I've been on the board. Thanks for your reply. Sher ipf 5-06

Joyce. Hey, a good idea. I didn't know I could request them. Everything is treated so darned "secretively" and I'm the patient. I'll begin asking for copies of everything from now on.

thanks Joyce. Sher
