Hi Allie,

You raise a very important point. Thank you for raising it with the group. We

can't speak for every provider of behavioral feeding services, of course. But

we are happy to clarify this portion of our process.

ABS does not test for underlying medical issues. We are not physicians, and it

is beyond our area of expertise. However, we do have a lengthy intake process,

in which we screen for the potential of underlying issues. Some of the

questions we ask involve: reflux, eating history, illnesses, hospitalizations,

oral motor issues, gastro issues, and the like.

If there is any concern or previous history of issues, we require the parents to

get clearance for the feeding therapy from their physicians, which may include

additional testing from those providers. For families who have not followed

through on getting required medical clearance, we do not provide feeding

intervention until such clearance is obtained. Only once we have clearance from

a physician (and in some cases require that a physician be available for consult

during the feeding therapy) will we proceed with implementing our feeding

protocol.

Additionally, we will work with any current provider (OT or speech) to

understand to what degree the mechanical/muscular issues may be impeding eating.

I hope this answers your questions.
