Mycotoxin producing toxigenic fungi have been identified in field crops and crop storage containers and they have been found to persist long after the fungi that have produced them have died due to their low level of chemical lability. The reported experimental 50% lethal doses of several mycotoxins, including hepatotoxic aflatoxins, ochratoxin-A (303479), citrinin (518752), sterigmatocystin (10048132), vomitoxin (51481108), diacetoxysciropenol (2270408), and T-2 toxin (21259201) were described. Three reported cases of disease induction in humans thought be related to the inhalation of mycotoxins were described. All three cases involved inhalation of aflatoxins. Subsequent studies on aflatoxin levels in corn and other agricultural dusts have demonstrated high airborne aflatoxin levels. No consistent relationships have been seen between aflatoxin levels in the airborne dust and those measured in bulk corn or between aflatoxin levels and different particle sizes. The authors present recommendations for future research in this area.
