The Schools Construction Corp. said this week it will perform the demolition work at the Midtown Community School to get rid of gypsum the mold grew on, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported on its Web site Wednesday. The school, which was to open this fall, is now expected to be ready, at the earliest, in the fall of 2008, officials said. It's the second time the SCC, created to upgrade schools in poor communities, has needed to tear down a building it commissioned. In 2006, Trenton's partially built Luther King Elementary School had to be torn down because there was contaminated soil underneath. The SCC is looking into whether it has legal claims to recover costs in both cases.
