Guest guest
You know me - I will look :-) Check out Nutrition Info at: Nutrition.teach-nology.com Ortiz, RD nrord@... Eat Healthy, A Body is a Terrible Thing to Waste Books/recipe websites for children 3rd-5th grade? Hi - I've just been asked to teach a " Lunch Bunch " class to the 3rd-5th graders in our homeschool co-op. The children will prepare their own lunches, learn a little about kitchen safety and nutrition, etc. The class will be one hour long, and will be midmorning, so the children won't be eating their lunches right away. Homeschool co-op runs for 10 weeks, so I'll be planning for ten - 1 hour classes. Since I was just asked this afternoon to do this, I haven't done any research for recipes or anything else on the Internet yet. Classes start in September, so I have awhile to plan. Do any of you have some kid-friendly recipe websites and nutrition websites bookmarked? Any websites that would provide me with nutrition, kids' recipes, and food preparation/safety brochures for free? Ortiz, if you're reading this, do you have any good freebie websites that would be good for this class? TIA - Laurie , MS, RD, LD
Guest guest
1) www.bellinstitute.com is a great starting point - lots of handouts that can be used for teaching even younger ones- esp. 3rd - 5th graders 2) You can do a Supermarket Tour and some stores have handouts or are willing to find something 3) I know when I did Girl Scouts (years ago now) Olive Garden and Little Caesar did tours and then fed the girls. There may be restaurants that do that in your area - check your local Girl Scouts - they may have a list - plus there are always ideas in the Brownie/Juniors books. 4) Check 5-A-Day http://www.5aday.org/html/educators/educators_home.php Recipes, activity sheets you can download 5) Dole has their 5-A-Day also http://www.dole5aday.com/ 6) Sign up for the free Nickelodeon mag for each child https://w1.buysub.com/servlet/OrdersGateway?cds_mag_code=NIK & cds_page_id=22668 7) http://www.teachnology.com/ This site is geared for teachers - check for links, etc. This is the group I have my website set up with. Some things cost but you could spend all day going through this site. I haven't used them but I believe the message boards are free - and you can go on the the 3-5th grade board. As I find things I will forward... If anyone is interested I have a free/deals email listing that I send out almost daily of deals/freebies I find. Feel free to email if you are interested - if it becomes too much always feel free to cancel...not everybody is as crazy as me! Guest guest
a super easy smoothie that the kids can make up - is 2 tbsp orange juice concentrate + 1 cup milk + 1/2 cup ice. They blend this up or use a hand held - easy and fast. I and one of my son have demonstrated this for a local TV show. Plus, kids love it! Guest guest
2 TB frozen concentrate is not enough to curdle the milk if you add the milk to the concentrate and whip fast.
