Health Benefits of Nuts - Antioxidants May Play a Role

Reference: " Health benefits of nuts: potential role of antioxidants, "

Blomhoff R, Carlsen MH, et al, Br J Nutr, 2006; 96 Suppl 2: S52-60.

(Address: Department of Nutrition, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences,

University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway).

Summary: In an article discussing the health benefits of nuts and the

role of antioxidants in the protection of animal cells, walnuts, pecans

and chestnuts were found to be among the plants with the highest total

antioxidant content. Walnuts were found to be an especially rich source

of antioxidants, with 20 mmol antioxidants per 100 g. In a previous

report by the same authors, consumption of nut/peanut butter was found

to be associated with a reduced risk of death. Consuming nut/peanut

butter once/week was found to have a hazard ratio of 0.89 and consuming

nut/peanut butter 1-4 times/week was found to have a hazard ratio of

0.81 for total death rates. Significant reductions in death due to

cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease were associated with

consumption of nut/peanut butter as well. The authors conclude by

suggesting that further studies are needed to investigate whether the

protective effects of nuts are due to their antioxidant content.
