Hi Tam,

I am just getting caught up with all the messages. There isn't a set

answer to your question. What you do really depends on your own

assessment of the situation, and how you want to handle it. This can

be scary for us BPs at first - we get caught up in nada's black and

white thinking and believe that there is only one way to handle a

situation.

One thing I would advise, however, is that you have to be prepared to

inforce whatever boundaries you plan to set in this situation, as your

nada will try to get you to back down. The good thing, however, is

that once you have established these boundaries, it will be easier the

next time - and often saying the same thing in different situations is

appropriate. And that helps the BP realize that you really mean what

you are saying.

Hope your children have/had happy birthdays,

Sylvia

Hope,

I am so sorry for what you are going through.  Have you spoken with your local

county Human Services office?  Or, possibly even your local Health Dept.  Also,

check with your local hospital or the hospital where  is being treated to

see if they have an Indigent Care program.  Also, contact Social Security and

ask them about Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income, which can qualify you

for extra assistance.  I pray something works out for you.  I understand your

worry and the pain you're feeling right now.  Please know both you and

are in my prayers. Much love and...........

Warm Hugs...........

Good Am, I want to ask for advice for . The doctors here that will

see him, seem to be giving up or something. He went to er last week and

they said he needed Vitamin K , and they never gave RX for this. We

contacted his primary Dr. and they would not give Rx for K. This dr. was

the one who wanted to give K to because of his blood clotting

factor. We called Gastro Dr. because he is full of fluid again,

and they said they would call us back, but did not do so. stays

so cold, even after he recieved 2 units of blood the other week, now he

tells me he is cold, but feels very hot on the inside. I took care of my

dad when he was ill, he had the same problem and it was because of not

enough oxygen in blood, and his blood was low. I really do not know

where to turn for help. We are in N.C. and I wondered if there would be

some kind of outreach program or something, some way to get him help

until Medicare kicks in. Any advice would be appreciated. .......God

Hope, while you are waiting to get the prescription, you can buy it over the

counter at just about any pharmacy. It is Potassium, same thing different

name. Among other things, it will keep him from getting dehydrated. I take

a lot of supplements and that is the only one I do have a prescription for.

I have mentioned getting prescriptions for the others since they were all

recommended by doctors, but haven't gotten my pcp to do so yet, not sure if

I have asked my new one. I just double checked what I wrote above, and most

sites agree with me, medical sites. Wikipedia has a different explanation.

But my doctors use the terms interchangably. Jan H

Vitamin K is normally only given through a transfusion of some sort. There isn't

an over the counter vitamin for that. As far as I know I'm not sure if there is

a prescription medicine for it other than what is given intravenously. Meaning,

there is no effective pill for vitamin K that I am aware of.

Vitamin K can be found in a lot of food though. Mostly ALL your very dark green

vegetables. Spinach, greens, etc.

It may be a time to also ask the doctor for a referral for a second opinion.  It

may also be ok, to try to sit with the doctor and explain you are fighting for

his life, and if the doctor isn't willing to go the extra mile for something

like Vitamin K then maybe another doctor is. But it comes down to money for

them, not the patients ultimate health care.  Until Medcare, the ER has to treat

him to the point he is stabalized. So until you have insurance, your only

recourse is the ER.

But remember, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Be a spokesman for your husband.

If you feel your are getting the run around in the ER or feel they are pushing

you aside because you don't have insurance, insist, on seeing the patients bill

of rights. READ them. Insist on knowing who the hospitals patient advocate is.

When you start being a bit forceful and they know what you are asking for, they

start singing a different tune.

Just my opinion,

MaC

Mac - are you saying I am wrong in saying potassium is Vitamin K? I

researched it online just to make sure, and sites agree with me. My own

doctors have used the terms interchangably. Of course that doesn't mean I

am right. But even if they are just close, do the same thing, potassium may

help while they are still fighting the good fight with the doctors. JMHO

Hey Jan,

I don't believe vitamin K is the same as potassium. Vitamin K is only found in

food we eat and is necessary for cell structure and blood coagulation. Without

it, will cause severe bleeding problems. It is given in hospitals as a coagulant

or a platelet transfusion. In people with liver disease the vitamin K deficiency

is normally seen as a low platelet factor. I couldn't find anything relating it

to potassium.

Mac - it is really weird, but as I said, I double checked to make sure they

were the same. since your post, I have been checking again, and can't find

the posts I found before. Weird. But, the ones I did find said Vitamin K

is found naturally in greens. Does/ Will eat greens? It can't hurt

to concentrate on increasing the amount until he can get a doctor to

prescribe Vitamin K. Jan H

Before my transplant, I took vitamin K pills (Mephyton) that was prescribed by

my GI doctor. I never got it in an IV. The prescription vitamin K cost us

about $60 a month out of pocket since my prescription insurance wouldn't pay for

it.

Thanks Penny,

I wasn't aware it came in pill form.  I know my wife was always given it with a

platelet transfusion to help improve her platelet count. I guess since she was

always in patient for that and already hooked up to an IV that was the easiest

way to give it.  I do remember one time asking if there was a prescription for

it and for some reason the doc never gave her one.

I just learned something from you. I get that same cold feeling and hot and

burning on the inside sometimes. I didn't realize it was caused from not enough

oxygen in the blood, but it makes sense since it happened a couple of times

before my blood transfusion, and it happened again today and my red blood cell

counts are low again.

I hope you can get the prescription for vitamin K (Mephyton) soon. My GI doctor

prescribed it to me before my transplant. My insurance wouldn't pay for it, so

it shouldn't matter if you have insurance or not to get it.
