I just received my son's test result of Yasko supplementary panel, in which the SNPs included were not previously available when we did the Yasko nutrigenomic panel in year 2005. In our case, BHMT (betaine homocysteine methyltransferase) mutations require most attention this time. My son has mutations on 3 out of 4 BHMT genes on the panel. One of these, BHMT 8 is of homozygous mutation. Mutations with BHMT are associated with lack of attention and focus.

The product of these genes is central to the "short cut" through the methylation cycle, helping to convert homocysteine to methionine. I just recently tested my son for urine and plasma amino acids. His urine methionine is low and plasma methionine is at the low end of the reference range, although urine and plasma homocystine levels are normal. His body seems to waste phosphoserine, which is high in urine but low in plasma. We have been supplementing phospholipids on and off, not consistently. I need to give this a good go.

Yasko has a long list of supplements meant for supporting mutations on different BHMT genes. For now I will give phospholipids more frequently, continue DMG and NADH injections, add back a low dose methionine and SAMe, change methyl B12 injections to hydroxyl B12 injections to get leeway for tolerating more methyl donors, and use butyrate and charcoal to mop up ammonia when needed. Hope these can stimulate BHMT and get the "short cut" of methylation cycle working.

Any inputs are appreciated.
