a question about essential oil use

I appreciate the wisdom shared here. I have a question that perhaps

some of you might shed light on.

My young 8 yo daughter does not want her diagnosed BP father, (who is

middle aged and recently living with a woman quiite his senior, in her

home) to come to a significant event of our daughter's.

The reason my daughter does not want him there, is because he has a

habit of sniffing essential oils from bottles in public. He also wears

a lot of them at once and is rather pungent. We would all be sitting in

a rather small space for a ceremony honouring our daughter, that will

last about an hour. I think she is also afraid he might bring this new

woman as well, who my daughter describes as " icky " . I have not met her.

First of all does anyone know what this oil sniffing business is about?

I have used nice quality healing oils in my bath, have burned some in a

candle in a new home, or during meditation, etc. but would never think

of keeping bottle in my shirt pocket to sniff, as it seems he does, as

his emotions change while grocery shopping, or just walking across the

street. He literally cannot go an hour without sniffing something and

is making our daughter sniff them too before they enter a public place.

Second, he never cleans his vehicle up for her, and it offends her to

get into it. It is really dirty inside, and I would shun from getting

in too. She saw him clean it when a friend of hers got in once, but

never for her. She finds it so disrespectful to her.

Does this sound like part of BPD or does this sound like something

else? This guy's mother was diagnosed as bipolar in the 60's, but I

know very little about bipolar disorder. Is it genetically passed on?

Wisdom appreciated!
