Guest guest
Hi all. Have any of you been (or are still taking) Alendronic Acid (Fosamax) and heard about the side effects regarding teeth? I went to the dentist today as I'd read something about it and he basically said something about because of how these drugs work they can affect the jaw and the teeth. I'm currently taking 70mg weekly and wondering if there are any alternatives as I don't like the sound of that. I'm currently taking 4mg of Pred a day and have the middle stage ... osteopena. I'm thinking now I'm on a lower dose of Steroid, the bone thinness won't get any worse? Thanks in advance. Steve
Guest guest
I hope this helps. See below, got it off Web MD. What is Fosamax? Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium) is a type of drug known as bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates such as Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium), Zometa (Zoledronate), Didronel (Etidronate), Aredia (Pamidronate), Actonel (Risedronate), generic Fosamax (Alendronate) and Boniva (Ibandronate) are commonly prescribed to menopausal and post-menopausal women (generally women age 65 to 84 years old) by doctors to treat, prevent, and reverse bone loss associated with osteoporosis, chemotherapy, and other bone loss disorders. Recently a link has been found between bisphosphonates and low energy femur fractures (thigh bone fractures) and a serious bone disease called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ aka. Dead Jaw). Guest guest
 Steve  I was on Fosamax for a few years now if it did any thing to my teeth I do not know being I had such bad ones to start with from years and years of a med when I was younger. Fact is I had braces so that my bite would be okay for dentures later in life (there now) but they said that would be when I was about 30 and they did not happen tell my late 40's. Now along that line did it help me again I do not know as I was blessed with very dense bones and hard ones also. Took many hits when younger that should have broken them but never did. My bone scans showed the same. Now once off of the evil predasion they also stopped the Fosamax and I have not used ether now for over 5 years. On my last bone marrow test they made a comment about how dense my bone was so that’s was good to here. I look at it as the same as Predasion its a drug that if you need it and it helps you great as long as the side effects do not become worse then the illness its to help with. now as for predasion my doc and I will not use it but as a very last resort as it did have a side effect that did become worse then the cure or help but as far as Fosamax never noticed any thing but that’s my own personal story yours may well be deferent just as stills is deferent for us all yet kind of the same at the same time. Hugs    The  Redneck  Marty G      I watch the sands of time run threw the hour glass of my life knowing I can not change what has passed. All I can do is live for today and hope for tomorrow and that it's a better day then the one I am leavening here today As I move into the one filled with hope that’s called tomorrow.
