Hi,

I had a wonderful Christmas with my family, but I felt horrible about

leaving Jim for a day to be with my family. I did not have time to visit

with him on Christmas Eve, as that is the day that we celebrate and open

gifts and I had so much to prepare and get ready to bring to the big event.

My oldest daughter had Christmas Eve at her house and did a fantastic job

and had a wonderful dinner for us all.

My sister spent the night at my house on Christmas Eve night and the next

night and left early this evening. We went to visit Jim on Christmas night

and he was in good spirits, even wanted to get out of bed for awhile. My

sister gave him a balloon ball for Christmas. It looks like a balloon, but

has the surface of a ball. We all hit the balloon back and forth. It was

great exercise for Jim and he seemed to have fun with it. He also ate his

dinner well.

This evening I went in to visit him and he was so weak. Entirely different

from the night before. He could bearly sit up. His blood pressure was 90/70

and he almost passed out. He was shaking and could hardly hold his head up

to drink liquids. When Jim's blood pressure drops at the hospital they put

him on Potassium Chloride to get it up again, I thought that maybe putting

some salt on Jim's dinner would give him some chloride, sodium chloride, and

he also had a banana on his dinner tray and that was potassium, so I fed

him the salty dinner and the banana. He ate a good portion of it and drank

two full glasses of orange juice, which is good to get the blood sugar up.

The nurse took his BP later and it had gone up to 110/90. jim was not

shaking so much either. He still seemed very weak though and I hear all

kinds of mucus in his throat that he can not cough up. He is too weak to

cough it up. I bought some Mucinex. Has anyone here used that for

mucus/phlegm for their LO?

I bought it in Child's form, because it is liquid form and easy for Jim to

take. It is with Guaifenesin, so I figure it's ok to give to him. I am not

going to wait around for the doctor to ok it. Jim is nearly choking on his

mucus. I want to losen it up for him. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I just feel so

helpless to help Jim and I feel like I am trying to communicate with an

invisable doctor, since I have never met Jim's doctor at the nh. I asked at

the nh when the doctor visits, but they said there is no routine day, the

doctor shows up when the doctor shows up.

I can only leave messages to the doctor through his advice nurse or have

the nurses at the nh fax the doctor. I feel like things are not being done

quick enough to help Jim. Some days are much better with Jim and I feel good

and tonight I feel like I am sinking.

I am on a 2 week vacation and I am going to spend it with Jim everyday all

day for the next few weeks to try and build him back up. Now, that Christmas

is over and I don't have that to think about too.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and if you don't celebrate

Christmas a wonderful holiday..................Jan

Hi S,

Thank you for your concerns. I am on that LBD emotional roller coaster, never

knowing quite where Jim is on his journey. One day he seems in good spirits and

another day so weak. Today, was a good day. I have a good feeling from today

that he is going to pull through this. I pray that he does. He has been hit

back to back with a severe UTI and then Pneumonia all within a week of each

other. His immune system broke down, but I am there now everyday for 8-9 hours

to make sure that he is eating his meals and drinking liquids. He has lost so

much weight from not eating, but I am going to build up his strength again. He

ate well today and all his vital signs are normal again. I started giving him

Mucinex, child's strength, for all the congestion in his chest that he can not

cough up. I am sure if they found out at the nh that I was giving him medication

that was not a doctor's order that I would be in deep trouble, but I have called

the doctor and left a message for a

perscription for chest congestion and did not hear back. Jim has taken the

medication for two days and already shows great improvement. He is coughing and

sneezing up gobs of mucus, now that the medication has loosened it up. He even

was chatty today. Maybe the medication is making him chatty. Although, there is

no alcohol in it, but it was sure good to hear, since he has not talked in 3

weeks.

I pray that tomorrow is another good day.

Hugs to you S............Jan

Hi Jan-

I have been following your recent days and our

hearts go out to you and Jim. I am sure your love

for Jim and the extra cares you give will see him

through this bump in his journey. I understand what

you wrote about the " emotional roller coaster " at this

time. It seems that every day is a " what will happen

today and am I prepared for it " kind of day then when

there is improvement there is a bit of peace only to

worry for the next moment.

Thank you for the continued updates on Jim. How

are you holding up today? I know there are days

when you want fall, when the stress of it all catches

up yet please know Jan, you will make it through

this and with strength. I can't explain how it happens

except with faith.

Hugs again, to you and Jim-

Jan,

One of the nursing home nurses told me that as the family I could give my Mother

anything that I wanted. It's just the nurses that have to have a doctor's

orders. This is to

protect them from any lawsuits.

Keep up the good fight,

Jan,

Glad to hear that Jim is doing better. I am sure your just being with him is an

immense help to him. Hope his lungs get cleared up. Where in heck is the

Doctor anyway. Hope you find him at some point while you are there! I would

find it unusual that you didn't see him any more than you have.

Hi Jan

It was great to hear from you. I will continue to pray

for Jim and that your trips all work out. I know this

is a huge set back for Jim, but let's pray that he

recovers totally.

I thought that Kaiser Dr's had to return your calls

within the 24 working hours. Was it over a holiday or

weekend that you called? If not I would call again.

My mom would have this chronic drippy eye. Almost like

pink eye. And I would and still just go in every day

like usual and put the drops in when no one is around.

I just can't be bothered with all the ordeal it takes

to get a prescription and then I have to go get it

etc... when I already have some at home. It clears up

every time. She gets it once or twice a year. The

prescription is old now, so I will have to get the Dr.

to prescribe it next time. We do what we have to do.

Hope you all have a great New Year!! I will be busy

getting my Aunt settled either here or possible a

different rehab, so I may be off for a while. I will

try to read as much as possible. I will thinking for

you all daily.

Jan,

I am glad that Jim seems to be doing a bit better. Probably because of all the

TLC you are giving him. He is very blessed to have you in his life as I can see

how deeply you care about him. I am sure the nursing staff are glad you are

there as it lets them off the hook for so much of the care. Thanks for giving

us an update and I will continue to pray that the congestion will clear up and

he will start feeling better soon.

Hi Dena,

Yes, I left the message with the Kaiser doctor and said that I had my cell

phone on for a return call or to leave a message. Well, of course, I sat in

Jim's room for hours and the moment I stepped out, the doctor called, but I

wasn't there to receive the call and he left a message, so I called back and he

wasn't there, I left another message, but never heard back. So I just started

giving Jim the medication anyway for two days and then today a nurse said that

the doctor has approved the medication. So now officially he can take it. I just

gave Jim a two day head start! I hate not being able to meet the doctor and

speak with the doctor. I have to be at the Home at the right time and moment the

doctor visits, as there is no set time.

Jim has that same eye thing, the doctor called it Blepheritis. He has

medication too. I also thought it was pink eye when it started about 3 or 4

years ago. It comes back about every 4 months. So, whenever it reoccurs the

nurse will put the medication on his eyes. His is not drops, but an ointment in

a tube and it goes on the lower and upper lids of the eyes and within a day it

is gone, until about 4 months later when it shows up again.

What drops does your mother take for her eyes?

Have a great New Year and I hope that it all goes the way you want it to go

for your aunt to be in rehab.

to get a prescription and then I have to go get it

etc... when I already have some at home.

Hi Jan

My mom is on the same stuff. It is a tube of ointment

rather than drops. They probably have the same thing.

I accidentally meet the Dr once in the 10 months that

she has been there. I had him go to her room and check

her bed sore. I hardly ever saw the second Hospice

nurse either. She would come at such weird times. You

can always call membership and complain that you

cannot speak to Dr and get them involved. Maybe try

one more time and then let membership know. You know

the saying

" The squeaky wheel gets the grease "

Off Topic: My Aunt's appeal was over turned and she

may remain at the rehab center until the next

evaluation which will be on Wed. We are watching them

like a hawk and have had meetings with everyone you

could think of. She got at least 1 & 1/2 hours of rehab

today when she was getting 30 mins. We have her up out

of bed for the majority of the day now too. What was

happening is she was up 30 mins each day and then in

bed the rest of the time. She was getting so weak and

they felt that she had plateaued and would not get any

better than she was. Well, today she walked twice the

distance that she had been walking so she definitely

has not plateaued. My cousin and I are all over this

and have many outsiders watching was well. They are

finally handling things the way we want them handled.

It is too bad that you have to go to such lengths to

get the quality of care that you are suppose to get. I

am not really happy with Kaiser at this point either.

(If you missed the earlier post my Aunt broke her hip)
