i tell my clients that time means nothing. If I get 15 minutes to eat from a plate that has 2 raisins on it or if I get 30 minutes with the same plate, I'm still gonna be hungry. That's why I teach to switch sides when the swallows decrease in frequency. back and forth as needed--unless there's a milk supply problem--in which case I don't want to wear the baby out by sucking on a relatively empty breast... " that breast is emptied so she needs to do 15 on each side and not 30 min. on one side alone"

I disagree with this statement. I try to not even teach the idea that a breast is emptied. I teach that milk is synthesized right from the blood and if there is demand, mom will produce. What if this baby is a slow eater versus a barracuda baby? What if the baby needs more breath breaks? What if the suck is a bit disorganized and baby simply needs more time? If this mom thinks her breast dries up and quits after 15 minutes she may be switching babe long before necessary. A slow eater could theoretically eat all day long on just one side and always be getting something.

I think we need to be careful when we say general advice such as the above remark. Moms get so much general advice -- they need to watch their own baby and their own bodies.

My two cents...
