I used to study at Berkely, but my family lived in L.A. so tho it was a bit of a haul, I had reason to make the trek back and forth - don't know if this is a good enough reason for you, but maybe there are other things you could do while down there, Disneyland comes to mind of course. Or I'd encourage any and all to create your own local potlucks - I started one with 4 of us, it grew and it went on for three years - and many people tell me they miss it - but it does take work!!! and good people who help.
