Malpractice Insurance

I am new to this group, so I apologize if this is different than your

usual discussion topics, but I wonder if anyone has a solution to my

malpractice insurance problem. I am currently doing prenatal care in

conjunction with an OB group that sees the patients at 20 and 36 weeks

and performs the delivery. My malpractice insurance decided that they

would only cover me for " OB with deliveries " because I follow the

patients to term. I have strenuously objected and have endured more

than 4 months of wasting time waiting for an answer from their

underwriting. In the end, they will not work with me to lower the

rates and say that I now owe them my next payment (even though I would

have gotten a different insurer had they not given me the impression

that they would be able to work something out). I live in Michigan.

Any ideas of malpractice insurers who are comfortable with the " shared

care " model for OB? Thanks!

The company is Medical Protective. The insurance broker that I used, the Cunningham Group out of Chicago, told me that Medical Protective can be quite slow at times getting things through underwriting. I am just really frustrated that it took over 4 months and now I am stuck with premiums that are much higher than they should be.

What other companies are available in that state?Have you called your medical association? The New Mexico group I use is American Physicians Assurance Corporation (under AP Capital). I was told they also covered Michigan - you might call the companies that cover that state, see if you can get more information. Your premium should be prorated to the time you use the insurance if you switch companies. Physician's Mutual used to be quite repressive about prenatal care; I've been told they have changed. It is occurance based, which I gather is usually more expensive, as there's no tail. The company is Medical Protective.  The insurance broker that I used, the Cunningham Group out of Chicago, told me that Medical Protective can be quite slow at times getting things through underwriting.  I am just really frustrated that it took over 4 months and now I am stuck with premiums that are much higher than they should be.Get your email and more, right on the new Yahoo.com

Medical

Protective is actually about the best there is as far as ratings, etc go.

They are currently rated A+ (or close to it) by AM Best. I would try to

stay with them & work on the details rather than switch. I personally

do not even consider doing OB work anymore, both because I do not like it & because of the estraordinary

malpractice risks & costs.

's right. Here in Michigan, after researching malpractice carriers three years ago and then again every year, we went with Medical Protective and continue with them because their rates remain the lowest. However, rather than working with a Chicago office, try contacting HUB International Insurance Services in Grand Rapids. There's one woman who works with the Medical Protective accounts and she is easily accessible and would probably work with Medical Protective to help you to get the policy you need. The trouble is I am at home so I don't have her name handy but here is their phone number:

Call me directly at work this afternoon if you have problems reaching them.

(I got this phone number from a Google search ) I can then give you the name of the woman who helps us with our policy and I can be sure to give you the correct phone number!

I also agree with contacting them directly. I was able to find out about the part time reduction in my rates over the phone from the underwriter. I was going to switch to a physician owned company here through our IPA. I also had a recent change in my policy regarding work I do cleaning ears in the nursing home. I again contacted the underwriter and heard back in writing within 2 weeks. I think you should try a's phone number, I'm betting the person on the other line can at least get you hooked up with the right person.
