Sometimes people overthink. Because KT is said to strengthen the immune system, then someone might think it would overcome the immunosuppressant medication. I think if anything, KT would help the person taking that type of med not to get sick, by fending off bugs that the person's own immune system would not be able to attack, because of being suppressed. There are a couple of warnings about KT and pharmaceuticals. One is that if the med cannot be combined with vinegar-containing foods or drinks (such as some antibiotics), that's a problem. The other is that some people feel KT might sweep pharmaceuticals out of the body, recognizing them as toxins, and the solution to that is to take the medication separately from any KT intake, at least an hour or more separating. I take thyroid medication and maintain a separation. I am not a doctor and I would not want to be responsible for this decision, but I am offering what we've discussed on this list previously. If the drug is being taken in preparation for an organ transplant, or following one, that's a whole other set of issues I think. I think what you need to do is get some input from a medical person who is also a KT fan, and we have an RN on this list who might be able to give you some info. Maybe she'll write on- or offlist. --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Muste

Guest guest
Okay...hopefully I'll get this in the right place! Hi, As far as immunosuppresion goes, it would be my guess that the biggest issue would be just how immunosuppressed a person is. I don't believe that kombucha itself would have much activity against a medication unless the absorption of the medication is affected by acidity in some fashion. It is, however, possible for a severely compromised person to be colonized by organisms that are non- pathogenic to most; some of the most benign organisms can overgrow and cause problems or actual disease when they are not held in check by a healthy immune system. I don't have the info in front of me, but I have heard of an instance where an already ill and immunocompromised individual was infected with a normally benign, probiotic yeast (which migrated into the blood, causing sepsis, or septic shock). This is one of a few examples; of course there are many, many more people who feel a diet rich in probiotics and cultured foods is healthful and consume them freely with no problems (my family and I belong to that group, although none of us have immunity problems, thank God). If you are taking a suppressive medication (such as after a transplant, etc) I would check with your doc; generally I would think that if you have not been advised to stay away from things like yogurt, etc, then other probiotics would probably be okay. If you have other immunity issues, definitely do your research and ask your doc. I am not trying to offer medical advice, but am happy to try to explain things to the best of my abilities! Hope this helps!
Guest guest
> > Okay...hopefully I'll get this in the right place! Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. My friend is on Immunosuppressant Medication because of a sever case of psoriasis (about 95% of her body). I don't agree with her physicians suggested course of treatment but, my friend is going along. Other's have advised her not to drink kt. I've suggested she discuss it with her physician. Perhaps she can speak with her with a little more information. Thx - Randie
Guest guest
I know we have other folks on this list with psoriasis, perhaps they have some input to give on this question? >Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. Guest guest
Another thought...once again, I'm not dispensing medical advice, but something of interest to think about...there's some evidence that a number of autoimmune and hypersensitivity reactions may be related to our environments... Recent studies show that kids growing up in extremely clean houses are less healthy than kids growing up in " messier " homes (if you could see my house you'd know why I think my kids must be the healthiest kids in the world!); and there has been some investigational treatment of people with severe allergies (which is an over-reaction of the immune system) by exposing them to certain parasites or parasite eggs (creepy but true!). The idea, in simple terms,is that if the immune system has something to work on, it won't turn on its host! In that line of reasoning, then kombucha tea might be great for someone with psoriasis, etc! Pure idle speculation only...continue to check with your choice of health providers and due diligence, and all that!

I knew there was some reason I couldn't keep this place cleaned up. I am providing a better environment for the kids. My youngest has taken to pouring drinks on the floor and licking them up like the dog. I have too many kids for this to shock me, but try to stop him when I catch him. I have found him next to the dog, both drinking from the floor. I am hoping this passes soon, but maybe it is the best thing for his system, bleck. Oh well, have a good one 3jsmom31 Dawn
Guest guest
> > In that line of reasoning, then kombucha tea might be great for > someone with psoriasis, etc! Pure idle speculation only... Oh, I agree. I have had some major bouts of psoriasis in the past. But, since I've been drinking kt I just don't have it anymore. And, I have some customers with psoriasis and other dermal conditions who have found great relief using my Kombucha soaps. Randie
