Hi All,

We are starting both in the UWTM at day 10. At lkeast in the treaadmill these guys get exercise that is controlled, they wear off lots of energy. Have had great luck. Hulls in Tx was the first one to recommend such an early start to me, but it makes sense. Especially in terms of muscle stregnth, there is much less atrophy when we start early. We have them back to normal function by 10 weeks. (Unfortunatley they look normal by 4 weeks but still need to ber restricted)

I was hoping to search this topic in our database, but since it's not completed yet I thought I would post. I have seen a lot of discrepancy regarding when Total Hips and TPLO's are started in the UWTM. Typically, I have been waiting five weeks post TPLO and 12 weeks post Total Hip. I feel that this may be too conservative and would like to hear what others have seen as successful. Thanks, Browne, DVM

I'm sorry for the late post but I'm catching up. I follow a prtocal

similar to Dr. Nichols. I will start a patient in the UWTM at 10 days

to 2 weeks post op as long as the incision has healed normally. We also

have had good results with this regime, especially with our canine

athlete patients who are usually in good body condition pre-op.

Hello All,

Are the uncemented THR's going in the UWTM that early too (POD #10)? It makes sense to me since wt bearing is limited with adjustable H2O levels.

Hi All,

My question--- what time frame would you

use for the TPLO and THR patients for a swimming pool?

Would this be the same as the UWTM?

Thanks for the input.

Hello,

In belgium the vets do not allow exercises before 6 weeks postop

(TPLO). After this 6 weeks we can start with the swimmingpool and

after two weeks swimming with the uwtm.

How comes that u can start with the uwtm after day 10? Is there now

risk that the bonefracture after TPLO is not strong enough (even

with the plate).

Sometimes I can start with a TPLO after 2 weeks but in the

swimmingpool.

Mayby the vets in belgium are to protective?
