Guest guest
Quoting sandra_dil : Haldol is the biggest no no in the world ! It is what did my Dad in. To be quite frank - Morphine is really only given at the end stages ... it slows down the heart rate etc... and in reality is used to speed up " the end " ... so if you have hopes for grandma;s recovery - try to stay away from the morphine too. Sorry you are juggling so much - I know I've been sandwiched myslef with my Dad with LBD and two little ones... HUGS donna > Hi gang > While I have not been posting, I have still been reading. Guest guest
Dear - You really have a lot going on right now! You must feel really torn with wanting to be with your kids and also with your Grandma. Take care of yourself and savor what time you have left with your Grandma. I'll be praying for you. God bless you, in WA OT-my Grandma Hi gang While I have not been posting, I have still been reading. Some of you might remember that my Grandma(92) wanted to move in with me last fall. Well, she did for a week. The stairs were too much for her, our basement is 11.5 feet high. We could not put her on main floor as MIL had that room. My boy's also sleep down there. It is walkout and very bright in the room I gave her. She moved to my brother's for a month, then chose to go to a NH in Toronto to be with her sister that has Alz. Grandma moved there on Nov 15. Before Christmas she started to act wierd. I was told by the charge nurse on Dec 27 that is was because of her poor hearing and was misunderstanding everything. I told her something was wrong. She thought people were out to get her. Said she hit somebody and now that lady was sick. Said she heard music saying bad things. More things happened in her delusions. She fell several times unexplained. By Jan 6, they had her tied in a wheelchair, but went in walking and talking. She quickly could not talk. On Jan 3 urine sample was taken and one on the tenth. The charge nurse and I got into on the phone when I asked why nothing back as the deterioration was so quick. I was told I was not allowed to call anymore. I told her to phone the POA(my brother) and explain to him why nothing was back yet. My sister went to Toronto on thursday and a different nurse was there, called MDS labs and guess what? Grandma has two infections, e- coli and klebsiella. She had been refusing to eat. Would not take antibiotic. Was taken to hospital saturday afternoon. I have been there sunday, monday and today. Each time she is worse. Not eating anything, clamps jaw shut. The nurse came to give her Haldol and I told ner NO.She was given it yesterday and it calmed her, but from what I learned here, it probably made her worse when it wore off. The nurse suggested talking to the doctor about morphine. Any advice? I figure just morphine with the other stuff. Her pulse last night and this morning was 159. She kept telling me " good-bye, forever, eternity " on sunday. I don't like seeing her suffer. She got it into her head a few weeks ago that she let her Saviour down. I have been reading the bible to her. It seemed to changed her while I read. But today nothing. She whimpered after reading on Monday. The doctor wants to talk with us tomorrow morning, He will be there before 9. It takes me 1 1/2 hours, my sister 2, my brother 3 hours to get there. I have the kids to feed and get to school, bus leaves at 8:05, give MIL breakfast too. Not superwoman, please pray for a safe journey for all tomorrow. Please pray for my Grandma for peace and comfort. Did I do the right thing in rejecting the Haldol? The nurse asked if I was a pharmacist!! Guest guest
Hi , I'd love to know the name of this NH. They have treated you awfully!!!!!!!!! You did the right thing to reject Haldol. I'd be interested to hear what the doctor has to say at the meeting. Isn't there anyway that they can give your aunt her meds for infection? It would make her feel 100% better. Hang in there. Guest guest
Hi Courage The NH is called Shepherd Village on Shepperd at Kennedy. Grandma went to the hospital last saturday in order to get meds intravenously. She has been steadily getting worse. Only mumbling yesterday although we heard her cry " mommy " twice. She was able to speak on sunday. We don't think she will make it through as she has not been eating for a week. We are going to discuss a feeding tube down the nose among other comfort measures. Will update later today. We will be reporting our concerns to the LTCF (NH) complaint line no matter what happens. Thanks, > > Hi , > > I'd love to know the name of this NH. Guest guest
- What a nightmare for everyone involved. I just can't believe what that nurse said to you. When I am in such a situation, I am usually taken back and lost for words, but right now I think a good come back is " No I am not a pharmacist, but tell me what you know about LBd. " Obviously not much. Haldol is definitely taboo for people with LBD. My Dad did not do well with Morphine. One mg. would knock him out for a week, so I refused Morphine everytime it was suggested. However, we did give it immediaitely before his death to keep him comfortable and calm. At that point I did not care if he was knocked out. Please take care. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Gerry OT-my Grandma Hi gang While I have not been posting, I have still been reading. Guest guest
Hi My heart and prayers are with you. It sounds like you have a less than compassionate nurse. I know you must feel better by now after talking to Dr. You made the right decision about the Haldol. I am learning that most of the world has no idea what LBD is or how to treat it. Even the Dr. I have from Hospice knows almost nothing about it. He just lumps it together with all Alzheimer's patients. Hang in there kiddo. We are all thinking about and praying for you. May God bless your Grandmother and you also. Dena --- sandra_dil wrote: > Hi gang > While I have not been posting, I have still been > reading. Guest guest
Sympathy from chicagoland. My mother has chronic bladder infection and when it gets out of hand, it knowcks her on her fanny. She just sleeps non-stop when the infection is too serious. She is supposed to be taking an antibiotic all the time but she often refuses it. And I've read that over-medication is the cause of a lot of problems. > > Hi gang > While I have not been posting, I have still been reading.
