Guest guest
Last post of the day....I promise. My son starts PPCD next week. Thanks to the recommendations from many here on this list, our ARD went well, and although long (5 hours), it looks like they'll be meeting all of 's basic needs. We lost a lot of time b/c of the SLP, who was arguing for group vs. individual therapy (which was completely inappropriate), making sure to not " over " promise the amount of minutes per 6 weeks (in other words, trying to " under " promise), and who had prepared completely inappropriate IEP goals. Anyway, because it had already gone on SO long, we ended up hammering out some VERY basic speech IEP goals that will surely not last for more than the first 6 weeks of school. I'm not sure what the SLP was thinking. It was my first ARD sitting on this side of the table (I'm a teacher), but this was not her first rodeo. Anyway, what I'm wondering is this. Have any of you ever called parent/teacher conferences with the SLP that works with your child? Can we hammer out new IEP goals during a p/t conference and then call a short ARD, or do we have to call the ARD first and then discuss the IEP goals in a group? Seems as though we could save a bunch of people some time by working on goals first together (the SLP and I) instead of making the entire ARD committee sit through the discussion from beginning to end. Also, I kind of like the idea of setting short term goals and then updating them every couple of months. My son is pre-verbal, and I'd imagine that we'll be making progress, so it seems silly to make year long goals. Is planning this way completely unacceptable, or just unorthodox? I'm learned a lot, listening to the many horror stories of the women in this group. I know that holding the district accountable is going to be huge, and that seems like a more easily attainable goal if we review things a few times per year. I figure that as long as I keep things short and sweet, I shouldn't face too much resistance. We'll see. Anyway, if anyone has had any experience (especially positive) with parent teacher meetings directly with the SLP on campus, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!
