dilated pupils

My son is 3 and I have noticed dilated pupils on him for at least a

year, possibly more. I took him for an eye exam several months ago

just to have someone take a look at this (prior to our 1st visit to

Dr G) where they told me his reaction to light was a bit slow, but

not too much outside of normal.

I never did remember to mention this to Dr G but my guess is it goes

along with the photo-sensitivity that accompanies a viral process.

(I remember 35 years ago when I had a terrible case of the german

measles and I was instrucuted by the doctor to stay out of the

sunlight or wear sunglasses.) After just 2 weeks on Valtrex I have

noticed my sons pupils smaller than they used to be, not all of the

time, the dilation seems to come and go.

pay attention couple of weeks ago. Since we did not have any

regressions since then, I do not know how long does he have it. I can

not connect it with any problems, just curios, could it be reaction

to meds, part of his condition or just God made him that way?

I think I have heard this described as being evident of the body being in a

state of " flight or fight " response. We see it off and on in our

child...sometimes when changing meds or changing doses. We also see red

ears (on the back edge).

My guy used to have those quite a bit. They seemed to be related to

allergies or perhaps allergies made the pot flow over enough to lead to them.

They normalized as we removed things he was reacting to.

I'm assuming you're meaning that the pupils are dialated pretty constantly

but if you are seeing brief periods of dilation during times where your child

is unresponsive, it is possible that these are absence seizures. When my son

was having seizures he'd have periods where he'd have a kind of out of body

experience, being totally non-responsive, and his pupils would dialate for a

few seconds. A few times, only one pupil would dialate.

I doubt it. We just treat the problems and watch all

the wierd changes that happen - sometimes things we

didn't notice or connect until we observe them leave.

My daughter's pupils dilate up and down throughout the day. I have

watched them for a long time and have found no triggers. I have seen

them go up and down and back again within a matter of one hour. Dr.

Goldberg has never really responded to this. I am wondering if it is an

inability to process sensory inputs throughout the day that trigger the

" flight or fright " response that only shows up in her eyes. Any other

ideas?

Just a quick thought - this can also be a sign of heavy metal

toxicity...

Pupil dialation can be a sign of allergy so people often report that their

kids' eyes are dialated when they're having bad days or off times. Sudden

dialation that is short-lived could also be a symptom of seizure. Pupil

dialation

accompanied by really bizzare behavior -- rages, screaming, maniacal giggling,

etc -- can also be a form of seizure. I think these are deep temporal lobe

seizures if I recall correctly. I think the difference would be the length of

time the dialation/weird behavior lasts and how the kid feels afterwards.

Hi Lori,

I don't have the answer to your question but I do have an autistic/mercury

poisoned son who has severe eye problems. Dilation is one of them, light

sensitivity, pain in one eye or the other...etc., I have been told mercury can

attribute to these eye problems, perhaps in the form of mild seizures. Have you

noticed anything else that seems to go along with the dilation?

We get our Diflucan in a white pill that is dye free. Ask for the generic

from TEVA pharmaceuticals.
